Disclosing new worlds : entrepreneurship, democratic action, and the cultivation of solidarity by Charles Spinosa( )

17 editions published between 1997 and 2011 in English and held by 2,322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

According to the authors, there are two major perils to history-making in Western society. One is the Cartesian tradition, which celebrates stepping back from everyday life to understand the world on the basis of rational deliberation. Against this, the authors advocate an intense involvement in the anomalies of everyday life as a means to understand the world and the changes it needs. The second is the neo-Nietzschean tendency to embrace radical, individual change for its own sake. Now that anyone can log on to the Internet to try on a new personality, the authors argue, it becomes increasingly urgent that we retrieve our history-making skills, both in our everyday lives and in our public roles

Michel Foucault, beyond structuralism and hermeneutics by Hubert L Dreyfus( Book )

66 editions published between 1982 and 2016 in 3 languages and held by 1,628 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, which Foucault himself has judged accurate, is the first to provide a sustained, coherent analysis of Foucault's work as a whole. To demonstrate the sense in which Foucault's work is beyond structuralism and hermeneutics, the authors unfold a careful, analytical exposition of his oeuvre. They argue that during the of Foucault's work became a sustained and largely successful effort to develop a new method -- "interpretative analytics"--Capable of explaining both the logic of structuralism's claim to be an objective science and the apparent validity of the hermeneutical counterclaim that the human sciences can proceed only by understanding the deepest meaning of the subject and his tradition. -- from (August 19, 2011)
Ways of the hand : a rewritten account by David Sudnow( )

6 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 1,526 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Looking back after more than twenty years, Sudnow was struck by the extent to which he had allowed his academic background to shape the book's language. He realized that he could now do a much better job of describing his experiences in a way that would not require facility with formal social science and philosophical discourse. The result is a revised version of the book that carries the same intellectual energy as the original but is accessible to a much wider audience."--Jacket

Being-in-the-world : a commentary on Heidegger's Being and time, division I by Hubert L Dreyfus( Book )

42 editions published between 1990 and 2009 in English and held by 1,182 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Being-in-the-World is a guide to one of the most influential philosophical works of this century: Division I of Part One of Being and Time, where Martin Heidegger works out an original and powerful account of being-in-the-world which he then uses to ground a profound critique of traditional ontology and epistemology. Hubert Dreyfus's commentary opens the way for a new appreciation of this difficult philosopher, revealing a rigorous and illuminating vocabulary that is indispensable for talking about the phenomenon of world. The publication of Being and Time in 1927 turned the academic world on its head. Since then it has become a touchstone for philosophers as diverse as Marcuse, Sartre, Foucault, and Derrida who seek an alternative to the rationalist Cartesian tradition of western philosophy. But Heidegger's text is notoriously dense, and his language seems to consist of unnecessarily barbaric neologisms; to the neophyte and even to those schooled in Heidegger thought, the result is often incomprehensible. Dreyfus's approach to this daunting book is straightforward and pragmatic. He explains the text by frequent examples drawn from everyday life, and he skillfully relates Heidegger's ideas to the questions about being and mind that have preoccupied a generation of cognitive scientists and philosophers of mind. Hubert L. Dreyfus is Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley
Sense and non-sense by Maurice Merleau-Ponty( Book )

9 editions published between 1962 and 1978 in English and held by 1,176 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At the core of Merleau-Ponty's philosophy is a sustained argument for the foundational role that perception plays in understanding the world as well as engaging with the world. Like the other major phenomenologists, Merleau-Ponty expressed his philosophical insights in writings on art, literature, linguistics, and politics. He was the only major phenomenologist of the first half of the twentieth century to engage extensively with the sciences and especially with descriptive psychology

On the internet by Hubert L Dreyfus( Book )

56 editions published between 2001 and 2017 in 4 languages and held by 1,119 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"On the Internet is a discussion of the promises and dangers of the Internet. Drawing on a diverse array of thinkers from Plato to Kierkegaard, On the Internet brings philosophical analysis to such questions as whether the Internet can solve the problems of mass education and bring humanity to a new level of community. Dreyfus shows the source of the attraction of being a ubiquitous net surfer in Plato's disdain for the body, and how Kierkegaard's criticism of the press and public opinion for its lack of commitment anticipate the dangers of the risk-free interactions made possible by the anonymity of the Web. Drawing on recent studies of the isolation experienced by many Internet users, Dreyfus shows how the Internet deprives users of essential embodied human capacities such as trust and involvement in shared local concerns. With reference to examples from his own teaching experience, the author also shows that 'interactive' education leaves out the shared moods and risks that make possible the acquisition of expertise."--Jacket
Heidegger, authenticity, and modernity( )

12 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 1,035 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sections are Philosophy and Authenticity; Modernity, Self and the World; and Heideggerian Encounters. The book concludes with Dreyfus's responses to the essays
Mind over machine : the power of human intuition and expertise in the era of the computer by Hubert L Dreyfus( Book )

47 editions published between 1986 and 2012 in English and held by 1,027 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Human intuition and perception are basic and essential phenomena of consciousness. As such, they will never be replicated by computers. This is the challenging notion of Hubert Dreyfus, Ph. D., archcritic of the artificial intelligence establishment. It's important to emphasize that he doesn't believe that AI is fundamentally impossible, only that the current research program is fatally flawed. Instead, he argues that to get a device (or devices) with human-like intelligence would require them to have a human-like being in the world, which would require them to have bodies more or less like ours, and social acculturation (i.e. a society) more or less like ours. This helps to explain the practical problems in implementing artificial intelligence algorithms
Retrieving realism by Hubert L Dreyfus( )

20 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in 4 languages and held by 954 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Retrieving Realism offers a radical critique of the Cartesian epistemic picture that has captivated philosophy for too long and restores a realist view affirming our direct access to the everyday world and to the physical universe." --
Time and death : Heidegger's analysis of finitude by Carol J White( )

6 editions published between 2005 and 2016 in English and held by 884 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Time and Death Carol White articulates a vision of Martin Heidegger's work which grows out of a new understanding of what he was trying to address in his discussion of death. Acknowledging that the discussion of this issue in Heidegger's major work Being and Time is often far from clear, White presents a new interpretation of Heidegger which short-circuits many of the traditional criticisms
