Now one of the most widely read works in philosophy, David Hume's An Enquiry concerning Human Understanding (1748) introduced his philosophy to a broad educated readership. In it he gives an elegant and accessible presentation of strikingly original and challenging views about the limited powers of human understanding, the attractions of skepticism, the compatibility of free will and determinism, and weaknesses in the foundations of religion. In this volume, an authoritative new version of the text is enhanced by detailed explanatory notes, a glossary of terms, a full list of references, and a section of supplementary readings

A treatise of human nature; being an attempt to introduce the experimental method of reasoning into moral subjects by David Hume( )

71 editions published between 1739 and 2012 in English and held by 2,516 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Following in the paths of Locke and Berkeley, Hume argued that all knowledge starts with sensation. But he rejected Berkeley's appeal to God to explain the stability and persistence of phenomena. Hume argued that the problem of relations between phenomena cannot be solved in empirical terms because we cannot immediately sense all causal relationships, since we sense only individual impressions. Therefore causation must be explained in terms of psychological habits resulting from the association of ideas. It is to this question that he addresses himself here
Essays on suicide and the immortality of the soul by David Hume( )

45 editions published between 1783 and 2020 in 3 languages and held by 2,448 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hume's two essays (pages 1-39), are followed by by two essays by the editor, a reprinting of two letters by Rousseau and Addison's essay; these other writings are described in another edition as "an antidote to the poison contained in these [that is Hume's] performances." Rousseau's letters are from his Lettres de deux amans, habitans d'une petite ville au pied des Alpes, 1761 (later entitled Julie ou la Nouvelle Heloise). Addison's essay is one of those added to his Evidences of the Christian religion in the 1733 edition. This seems to be the third edition of these essays by Hume, the earlier editions having been published first in 1777 as "Two essays," then in 1783. This is the first edition to include Addison's essay, not mentioned on the title page but included on the 1799 edition's title page. These two essays by Hume were Intended to be printed in 'Four dissertations', 1757, but were suppressed from publication

In his writings, David Hume set out to bridge the gap between the learned world of the academy and the marketplace of polite society. This collection, drawing largely on his Essays Moral, Political, and Literary (1776 edition), which was even more popular than his famous Treatise of Human Nature, comprehensively shows how far he succeeded. From 'Of Essay Writing' to 'Of the Rise and Progress of the Arts and Sciences' Hume embraces a staggering range of social, cultural, political, demographic, and historical concerns. With the scope typical of the Scottish Enlightenment, he charts the state of
