The History of the Russian Revolution by Leon Trotsky reissued here after long being out of print remains on of the most important books of the century - a classic of history, and a literary masterpiece. "Our book," Trotsky writes, "teaches not how to love a victorious revolution in the person of the bureaucracy it has brought forward, but only how the revolution is prepared, how it develops, and how it conquers." Now, forty years after the event, this books assumes a new meaning in the light of recent developments within the Soviet orbit

The revolution betrayed : what is the Soviet Union and where is it going? by
Leon Trotsky(
Book
)
136 editions published between 1936 and 2014 in 9 languages and held by 1,958 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The bourgeois world at first tried to pretend not to notice the economic successes of the soviet regime -- the experimental proof, that is, of the practicability of socialist methods. The learned economists of capital still often try to maintain a deeply cogitative silence about the unprecedented tempo of Russiaʹs industrial development, or confine themselves to remarks about an extreme "exploitation of the peasantry". They are missing a wonderful opportunity to explain why the brutal exploitation of the peasants in China, for instance, or Japan, or India, never produced an industrial tempo remotely approaching that of the Soviet Union. Facts win out, however, in the end. The bookstalls of all civilized countries are now loaded with books about the Soviet Union. It is no wonder; such prodigies are rare. The literature dictated by blind reactionary hatred is fast dwindling. A noticeable proportion o the newest works on the Soviet Union adopt a favorable, if not even a rapturous, tone. As a sign of the improving international reputation of the parvenu state, this abundance of pro-soviet literature can only be welcomed. Moreover, it is incomparably better to idealize the Soviet Union than fascist Italy. The reader, however, would seek in vain on the pages of this literature for a scientific appraisal of what is actually taking place in the land of the October revolution. -- Description from http://www.marxists.org/archive/trotsky/1936/revbet/intro.htm (April 12, 2012)

1905 by
Leon Trotsky(
Book
)
77 editions published between 1922 and 2016 in 7 languages and held by 1,163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In January of 1905, thousands of Russian workers, led by a priest on the payroll of the Tsar himself, marched to the gates of the Winter Palace with the intention of humbly petitioning their ruler for an eight hour work day. They were met by an intransigent detachment of royal guards who opened fire, killing hundreds of demonstrators. This massacre was the spark that set off an uprising that would shake the Russian Empire to its very foundation before the year's end. At the very center of this movement stood the newly created Soviet of Workers Deputies. Formed to coordinate the wave of mass strikes that stretched from St. Petersburg to Warsaw, this council became the de-facto voice of Russia's revolutionary workers, who chose Leon Trotsky as their elected leader. 1905 is Leon Trotsky's account of these events. With his characteristic combination of elegant, beautifully written narrative and incisive, insightful analysis, Trotsky's book-despite long being out of print-has remained the central point of reference for those looking to understand the rising of workers, peasants, and soldiers that would later become known as the Great Dress Rehearsal.' Originally written in 1908 for revolutionaries in and outside of Russia to better understand the dynamics and forces at play in order to better apply them to their own circumstances, this new edition reclaims these lessons for today's radicals

Lenin : notes for a biographer by
Leon Trotsky(
Book
)
65 editions published between 1924 and 1975 in 7 languages and held by 1,035 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Only a small number of men were ever in a position to write the secret and personal history of the Russian revolutionary movement, and of these Trotsky was one of the few privy to the inner councils and the inner thoughts of the man who beame God to Soviet Russia, Lenin. Although Lenin and Trotsky were markedly different in origin and early environment, their common impulse toward radical solutions to social problems brought them together in 1902. From then until the death of Lenin and the exile of Trotsky shortly after, they fought side by side for the common cause of revolution. This book is drawn from Trotsky's memories of these events, and his comments are those of both a historian and a personal friend of the Russian leader

My life : an attempt at an autobiography by
Leon Trotsky(
Book
)
157 editions published between 1929 and 2018 in 8 languages and held by 878 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The only Bolshevik leader to write his memoirs, Leon Trotsky published this remarkable book in 1930, the first year of a perilous, decade-long exile that ended with his assassination in Mexico. Expelled from the Communist party and deported from the Soviet Union, the former People's Commissar for Foreign Affairs recalled his lifelong struggle in the world of revolutionary politics. In addition to his firsthand accounts of the early intrigues within the Communist government, Trotsky also delivered chilling glimpses into the rise of the new Soviet bureaucracy and prescient warnings of the Stalinist regime's horrors. My Life recounts the rise of the revolutionary wave in Russia in 1905 and 1917, the devastating effects of World War I, and the degeneration of the Russian Revolution from Lenin's internationalist course to Stalin's increasingly counterrevolutionary policies. Trotsky's exile placed him beyond the pale of both the official Communist party and the rest of the political world; yet in this fascinating historical document, he remains true to a philosophy of permanent world revolution, offering a highly informed perspective on the struggle toward a socialist future
