Virtues and vices and other essays in moral philosophy by Philippa Foot( Book )

74 editions published between 1978 and 2009 in 4 languages and held by 1,573 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Foot stands out among contemporary ethical theorists because of her conviction that virtues and vices are more central ethical notions than rights, duties, justice, or consequences--the primary focus of most other contemporary moral theorists. This volume brings together a dozen essays published between 1957 and 1977, and includes two new ones as well. In the first, Foot argues explicitly for an ethic of virtue, and in the next five discusses abortion, euthanasia, free will/determination, and the ethics of Hume and Nietzsche. The final eight essays chart her growing disenchantment with emotivism and prescriptivism and t heir account of moral arguments. All the essays embody to some extent her commitment to an ethics of virtue. Foot's style is straightforward and readable, her arguments subtle, ingenious, and some of them important."--Choice
Natural goodness by Philippa Foot( Book )

56 editions published between 2001 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 1,486 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Philippa Foot has for many years been one of the most distinctive and influential thinkers in moral philosophy. Long dissatisfied with the moral theories of her contemporaries, she has gradually evolved a theory of her own that is radically opposed not only to emotivism and prescriptivism but also to the whole subjectivist, anti-naturalist movement deriving from David Hume. Dissatisfied also with both Kantian and utilitarian ethics, she claims to have isolated a special form of evaluation that predicates goodness and defect only to living things considered as such: she finds this form of evaluation in moral judgements. Her vivid discussion ranges over topics such as practical rationality, erring conscience, and the relation between virtue and happiness, ending with a critique of Nietzsche's immoralism. This work is an exposition of an approach to moral philosophy, which represents a fundamental break away from the assumptions of previous debates."--Jacket

Moral dilemmas and other topics in moral philosophy by Philippa Foot( Book )

26 editions published between 2002 and 2008 in English and held by 607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Moral Dilemmas presents the best of Professor Foot's work from the late 1970s to the 1990s. In these essays she develops further her influential critique of the 'non-cognitivist' approaches that have dominated moral philosophy over the last fifty years. She shows why it is a mistake to think of morality in terms of special psychological states, expressed in special kinds of judgement and a special 'moral' kind of language. Instead she portrays thoughts about the goodness of human will and action as a particular case of the evaluation of other operations of human beings, and indeed of all living things. Among other topics, she discusses moral relativism, utilitarianism, the nature of moral judgement, and practical rationality."--Jacket
Morality and action by Warren Quinn( Book )

8 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Warren Quinn was widely regarded as a moral philosopher of remarkable talent. This collection of his most important contributions to moral philosophy and the philosophy of action has been edited for publication by Philippa Foot. Quinn laid out the foundations for an anti-utilitarian moral philosophy that was critical of much contemporary work in ethics, such as the anti-realism of Gilbert Harman and the neo-subjectivism of Bernard Williams. Quinn's own distinctive moral theory is developed in the discussion of substantial, practical moral issues. For example, there are important pieces here on the permissibility of abortion, the justification (if any) of punishing criminals when no particular good seems likely to result, and on the distinction between killing and allowing to die, a distinction crucial to the subject of euthanasia and other topics in medical ethics. The volume would be ideally suited to upper-level undergraduate courses and graduate seminars on the foundations of ethics
Virtues and reasons : Philippa Foot and moral theory : essays in honour of Philippa Foot by Rosalind Hursthouse( Book )

18 editions published between 1995 and 2005 in 3 languages and held by 469 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A short review cannot hope to do justice to all the interesting (and controversial) material to be found in these dedicatory essays."--Michael Slote, Philosophical Quarterly 'To be welcomed for more reasons than one. Most obviously, it is fitting that Foot's salutary influence on moral theory should be celebrated by such a fine set of papers ... the papers in the volume have much to offer.' - Times Literary Supplement 'The twelve contributors include many distinguished philosphers; their varied contributions go to a set of themes distilled in Foot's own collection Virtues and Vices ... still a great pleasure to read, with its unfailing clear-headedness, its harmony of conviction and modesty, and the honest and unfussy directness of its arguments. Moreover, it is still philosophically instructive and provocative; as the essays in this Festschrift show.' - Margaret Urban Walker, Fordham University, International Philosophical Quarterly, Vol. XXXVII, No. 2, Issue No. 146, June 1997
