13 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,083 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The WeiLiang Chow and KuoTsai Chen Memorial Conference was proposed and held by Prof S S Chern in Nankai Institute of Mathematics. It was devoted to memorializing those two outstanding and original Chinese mathematicians who had made significant contributions to algebraic geometry and algebraic topology, respectively. It also provided a forum for leading mathematicians to expound and discuss their views on new ideas in these fields, as well as trends in 21st Century mathematics. About 100 mathematicians participated in the conference, including Sir Michael Atiyah, Jacob Palis, Phillip Griffiths, David Eisenbud, Philippe Tondeur, Yujiro Kawamata, Tian Gang, etc. This invaluable volume contains the selected papers presented at the conference. The topics include canonical maps of Gorenstein 3folds, fundamental groups of algebraic curves, Chen's interated integrals, algebraic fiber spaces, and others

RiemannFinsler geometry by
ShiingShen Chern(
)
20 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 993 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"RiemannFinsler geometry is a subject that concerns manifolds with Finsler metrics, including Riemannian metrics. It has applications in many fields of the natural sciences. Curvature is the central concept in RiemannFinsler geometry. This invaluable textbook presents detailed discussions on important curvatures such as the Cartan torsion, the Scurvature, the Landsberg curvature and the Riemann curvature. It also deals with Finsler metrics with special curvature or geodesic properties, such as projectively flat Finsler metrics, Berwald metrics, Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature or isotropic Scurvature, etc. Instructive examples are given in abundance, for further description of some important geometric concepts. The text includes the most recent results, although many of the problems discussed are classical."BOOK JACKET

The collected papers of WeiLiang Chow by
WeiLiang Chow(
)
12 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 944 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This invaluable book contains the collected papers of Prof WeiLiang Chow, an original and versatile mathematician of the 20th Century. Prof Chow's name has become a household word in mathematics because of the Chow ring, Chow coordinates, and Chow's theorem on analytic sets in projective spaces. The Chow ring has many advantages and is widely used in intersection theory of algebraic geometry. Chow coordinates have been a very versatile tool in many aspects of algebraic geometry. Chow's theorem that a compact analytic variety in a projective space is algebraic is justly famous; it shows the close analogy between algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory

From the reviews of the second edition: "The new methods of complex manifold theory are very useful tools for investigations in algebraic geometry, complex function theory, differential operators and so on. The differential geometrical methods of this theory were developed essentially under the influence of Professor S.S. Chern's works. The present book is a second edition... It can serve as an introduction to, and a survey of, this theory and is based on the author's lectures held at the University of California and at a summer seminar of the Canadian Mathematical Congress.... The text is illustrated by many examples... The book is warmly recommended to everyone interested in complex differential geometry." #Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, 41, 34#

Differential geometry in the large : seminar lectures, New York University, 1946 and Stanford University, 1956 by
Heinz Hopf(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1983 and 1989 in English and held by 531 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
These notes consist of two parts: 1) Selected Topics in Geometry, New York University 1946, Notes by Peter Lax. 2) Lectures on Differential Geometry in the Large, Stanford University 1956, Notes by J. W. Gray. They are reproduced here with no essential change. Heinz Hopf was a mathematician who recognized important mathema{u00AD} tical ideas and new mathematical phenomena through special cases. In the simplest background the central idea or the difficulty of a problem usually becomes crystal clear. Doing geometry in this fashion is a joy. Hopf's great insight allows this approach to lead to serious ma{u00AD} thematics, for most of the topics in these notes have become the star{u00AD} tingpoints of important further developments. I will try to mention a few. It is clear from these notes that Hopf laid the emphasis on poly{u00AD} hedral differential geometry. Most of the results in smooth differen{u00AD} tial geometry have polyhedral counterparts, whose understanding is both important and challenging. Among recent works I wish to mention those of Robert Connelly on rigidity, which is very much in the spirit of these notes (cf. R. Connelly, Conjectures and open questions in ri{u00AD} gidity, Proceedings of International Congress of Mathematicians, Hel{u00AD} sinki 1978, vol. 1, 407414 ) {u2022} A theory of area and volume of rectilinear'polyhedra based on de{u00AD} compositions originated with Bolyai and Gauss

An introduction to RiemannFinsler geometry by
David DaiWai Bao(
Book
)
18 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 456 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In Riemannian geometry, measurements are made with both yardsticks and protractors. These tools are represented by a family of innerproducts. In RiemannFinsler geometry (or Finsler geometry for short), one is in principle equipped with only a family of Minkowski norms. So ardsticks are assigned but protractors are not. With such a limited tool kit, it is natural to wonder just how much geometry one can uncover and describe? It now appears that there is a reasonable answer. Finsler geometry encompasses a solid repertoire of rigidity and comparison theorems, most of them founded upon a fruitful analogue of the sectional curvature. There is also a bewildering array of explicit examples, illustrating many phenomena which admit only Finslerian interpretations. This book focuses on the elementary but essential items among these results. Much thought has gone into making the account a teachable one
