Contemporary trends in algebraic geometry and algebraic topology by Shiing-Shen Chern( )

13 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 1,091 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Wei-Liang Chow and Kuo-Tsai Chen Memorial Conference was proposed and held by Prof S S Chern in Nankai Institute of Mathematics. It was devoted to memorializing those two outstanding and original Chinese mathematicians who had made significant contributions to algebraic geometry and algebraic topology, respectively. It also provided a forum for leading mathematicians to expound and discuss their views on new ideas in these fields, as well as trends in 21st Century mathematics. About 100 mathematicians participated in the conference, including Sir Michael Atiyah, Jacob Palis, Phillip Griffi
Lectures on differential geometry by Shiing-Shen Chern( )

33 editions published between 1996 and 2006 in 3 languages and held by 1,045 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a translation of an authoritative introductory text based on a lecture series delivered by the renowned differential geometer, Professor S S Chern in Beijing University in 1980. The original Chinese text, authored by Professor Chern and Professor Wei-Huan Chen, was a unique contribution to the mathematics literature, combining simplicity and economy of approach with depth of contents. The present translation is aimed at a wide audience, including (but not limited to) advanced undergraduate and graduate students in mathematics, as well as physicists interested in the diverse applic
Riemann-Finsler geometry by Shiing-Shen Chern( )

20 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 977 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Riemann-Finsler geometry is a subject that concerns manifolds with Finsler metrics, including Riemannian metrics. It has applications in many fields of the natural sciences. Curvature is the central concept in Riemann-Finsler geometry. This invaluable textbook presents detailed discussions on important curvatures such as the Cartan torsion, the S-curvature, the Landsberg curvature and the Riemann curvature. It also deals with Finsler metrics with special curvature or geodesic properties, such as projectively flat Finsler metrics, Berwald metrics, Finsler metrics of scalar flag curvature or isotropic S-curvature, etc. Instructive examples are given in abundance, for further description of some important geometric concepts. The text includes the most recent results, although many of the problems discussed are classical."--BOOK JACKET
The collected papers of Wei-Liang Chow by Wei-Liang Chow( )

12 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 946 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This invaluable book contains the collected papers of Prof Wei-Liang Chow, an original and versatile mathematician of the 20th Century. Prof Chow's name has become a household word in mathematics because of the Chow ring, Chow coordinates, and Chow's theorem on analytic sets in projective spaces. The Chow ring has many advantages and is widely used in intersection theory of algebraic geometry. Chow coordinates have been a very versatile tool in many aspects of algebraic geometry. Chow's theorem - that a compact analytic variety in a projective space is algebraic - is justly famous; it shows the close analogy between algebraic geometry and algebraic number theory
Complex manifolds without potential theory by Shiing-Shen Chern( Book )

49 editions published between 1967 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 929 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From the reviews of the second edition: "The new methods of complex manifold theory are very useful tools for investigations in algebraic geometry, complex function theory, differential operators and so on. The differential geometrical methods of this theory were developed essentially under the influence of Professor S.-S. Chern's works. The present book is a second edition ... It can serve as an introduction to, and a survey of, this theory and is based on the author's lectures held at the University of California and at a summer seminar of the Canadian Mathematical Congress ... The text is illustrated by many examples ... The book is warmly recommended to everyone interested in complex differential geometry." #Acta Scientiarum Mathematicarum, 41, 3-4#

Differential geometry in the large : seminar lectures, New York University, 1946 and Stanford University, 1956 by Heinz Hopf( Book )

10 editions published between 1983 and 2013 in English and held by 542 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These notes consist of two parts: 1) Selected Topics in Geometry, New York University 1946, Notes by Peter Lax. 2) Lectures on Differential Geometry in the Large, Stanford University 1956, Notes by J. W. Gray. They are reproduced here with no essential change. Heinz Hopf was a mathematician who recognized important mathema{u00AD} tical ideas and new mathematical phenomena through special cases. In the simplest background the central idea or the difficulty of a problem usually becomes crystal clear. Doing geometry in this fashion is a joy. Hopf's great insight allows this approach to lead to serious ma{u00AD} thematics, for most of the topics in these notes have become the star{u00AD} ting-points of important further developments. I will try to mention a few. It is clear from these notes that Hopf laid the emphasis on poly{u00AD} hedral differential geometry. Most of the results in smooth differen{u00AD} tial geometry have polyhedral counterparts, whose understanding is both important and challenging. Among recent works I wish to mention those of Robert Connelly on rigidity, which is very much in the spirit of these notes (cf. R. Connelly, Conjectures and open questions in ri{u00AD} gidity, Proceedings of International Congress of Mathematicians, Hel{u00AD} sinki 1978, vol. 1, 407-414 ) {u2022} A theory of area and volume of rectilinear'polyhedra based on de{u00AD} compositions originated with Bolyai and Gauss
An introduction to Riemann-Finsler geometry by David Dai-Wai Bao( Book )

18 editions published between 2000 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 466 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In Riemannian geometry, measurements are made with both yardsticks and protractors. These tools are represented by a family of inner-products. In Riemann-Finsler geometry (or Finsler geometry for short), one is in principle equipped with only a family of Minkowski norms. So ardsticks are assigned but protractors are not. With such a limited tool kit, it is natural to wonder just how much geometry one can uncover and describe? It now appears that there is a reasonable answer. Finsler geometry encompasses a solid repertoire of rigidity and comparison theorems, most of them founded upon a fruitful analogue of the sectional curvature. There is also a bewildering array of explicit examples, illustrating many phenomena which admit only Finslerian interpretations. This book focuses on the elementary but essential items among these results. Much thought has gone into making the account a teachable one

Seminar on nonlinear partial differential equations by Shiing-Shen Chern( Book )

16 editions published in 1984 in English and German and held by 398 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute was started in the Fall of 1982, one of the programs was "non-linear partial differential equations". A seminar was organized whose audience consisted of graduate students of the University and mature mathematicians who are not experts in the field. This volume contains 18 of these lectures. An effort is made to have an adequate Bibliography for further information. The Editor wishes to take this opportunity to thank all the speakers and the authors of the articles presented in this volume for their cooperation. S.S. Tight and taut submanifolds : papers in memory of Nicolaas H. Kuiper( Book )

12 editions published between 1997 and 2010 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Tight and taut submanifolds form an important class of manifolds with special curvature properties, one that has been studied intensively by differential geometers since the 1950s. They are in some ways the simplest figures after convex bodies: for example, tight manifolds in Euclidean space are characterized by the fact that their intersection with any half-space is connected. Examples include many well-known manifolds such as spheres, Veronese surfaces, isoparametric hypersurfaces, and the cyclides of Dupin." "This book contains six in-depth articles by leading experts in the field and an extensive bibliography. It is dedicated to the memory of Nicolaas H. Kuiper, and the first paper is an unfinished but insightful exposition of the subject of tight immersions and maps, written by Kuiper." --Book Jacket
