Wetlands in danger : a world conservation atlas( )

5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 1,132 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We meet the people who have come to depend on the resources of the wetlands for their livelihood: the fisher-people of the Sudd, who live on mounds that have been built up from natural detritus over the years; the Imraguen fishermen who, using long poles to beat on the water of Africa's Banc d'Arguin, attract dolphin that drive mullet inshore and into their nets; and the Ma'dan (Marsh Arabs) of Iraq, who have lived in the marshes for over 5000 years, isolated from the rest of Iraq by the extensive wetlands. (Using the expansive reed beds of the area, the Ma'dan have constructed artificial island houses that float on the lakes.) Wetlands also takes a look at the impact of wetlands loss on the people of these regions. By carefully monitoring threatened wetland regions, the IUCN (World Conservation Union) has revealed how the short-term gains of intensive agriculture, hydroelectricity, or other development projects may lead to the permanent loss of wetlands and their resources, and may destroy the livelihood of those people who depend on wetlands for pasture during dry season, and for their local fisheries. A multitude of up-to-date, full-color maps cover the wetlands region by region, providing information on the various types of wetland systems, wildlife, and vegetation in each area, and charting the course of conversion and degradation. Written in conjunction with the World Conservation Monitoring Centre, Wetlands is not only a breathtaking view of the treasures of these plentiful areas, but a compelling call to reevaluate how our actions can affect the delicate ecological balance in these important regions

The conservation atlas of tropical forests( )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 610 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Africa's forests are being depleted at a faster rate than of any other continent. A major increase in the population growth rate began after World War II and it is now running at an annual rate of 2.9 per cent, resulting in massive demands for agricultural land, water, fuelwood and other products. There is no simple answer to environmental degradation and forest conservation must be part of a broader process of managing the landscape. Here to address this topic is the new Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests: Africa, the first authoritative reference work on this subject. The second in a series this Conservation Atlas follows the format of the acclaimed Conservation Atlas of Tropical Forests: Asia and the Pacific (1991). Part I describes the issues, history of forests and climate, biological diversity, conservation of large mammals, and the peoples of the forests. Included are discussions of the links between population, environment and agriculture, the timber trade, protected areas system and the future for Africa's forests. Part II of the Atlas is a country by country survey of the forests of Africa. Stunning four-color maps, in a 9 x 12 format, have been compiled from satellite and radar imagery, aerial photography, and the latest information provided by forestry departments and development agencies. Both maps and text have been prepared and reviewed by a broad spectrum of specialists. The Atlas also includes four-color photographs and sketch maps. They represent the best visual portfolio available of Africa's forests today. For anyone interested in environmental issues, geography, forestry, development, economics, and the African region, this Atlas will be an essential resource
Madagascar( Book )

6 editions published in 1984 in English and Undetermined and held by 602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the forests of Madagascar, about nine-tenths of the plant and animal species are unique to the island. Their natural habitats range from true rainforest to the lunar landscape of the spiny desert, and the natural rock-gardens of the mountain tops. Madagascar is no oceanic island, but a fragment of continent a thousand miles long, wrenched loose from the side of Africa. In this Lost World, plants and animals have become a living museum of evolution. Aepornis, the largest bird which ever lived, became extinct on Madagascar in the last few hundred years. Many more Malagasy species are now
