There has never before been a major retrospective exhibition in Europe or America of Sisley's work, and there have been few serious publications. He remains therefore the least known of the Major Impressionists. Although a prolific artist, the uneven quality of his output has made it difficult to establish his particular place within the history of Impressionism. An important international exhibition (of which this is the catalogue) has been organised by the Royal Academy in London, the Musee d'Orsay in Paris and The Walters Art Gallery in Baltimore. By concentrating on only the highest quality pictures from throughout Sisley's career, his contribution to the forging of Impressionism in the 1860s, his mastery of style in the 1870s and his resolution of the problems of technique in the 1880s are all surveyed and illustrated. In addition, his individual exploration of the idea of serial painting in the 1890s is examined. The influence of earlier painters, both French and English, as well as of his contemporaries, is studied in Christopher Lloyd's essay on Sisley's stylistic development. Caroline Durand-Ruel Godfroy, great-granddaughter of the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, discusses the relationship between the artist and his dealer. The impact of Impressionism in America and the history of early exhibitions and collectors there have been researched by William Johnston, who publishes his findings. Written by an international team of scholars, this book is a richly illustrated complement to the exhibition, exploring all its themes in detail

"Alfred Sisley (1839-1899), although born and raised in France, was from a wealthy English family and maintained links with his ancestral homeland all his life. In 1874, after his participation in the now-infamous first Impressionist Exhibition in Paris, he stayed in London, where he painted classically Impressionistic studies of summer life along the River Thames." "When Sisley returned to Britain in 1897, he made a short visit to South Wales. He was entralled by the dramatic shoreline, and the paintings resulting from this trip were among the most audacious and vivid he had ever produced." "Alfred Sisley was best known for his distinctive Impressionist treatment of landscape and this book brings together a rarely seen collection of fresh and appealing studies of the banks of the River Thames, Hampton Court and South Wales."--Jacket

Alfred Sisley (1839-1899) was one of the greatest landscape painters of the nineteenth century and a leading figure in the Impressionist movement. This is the most detailed and authoritative survey of his life and work to be published thus far. With a wealth of illustrations, much new research, and an absorbing text, it reveals Sisley as an artist of seductive power and originality. Sisley's painting was devoted to the landscape. His celebrated scenes of the Paris countryside, views of the flooded Seine at Port-Marly, and colorful regattas on the Thames achieve a superb balance of tones and a poetic evocation of mood while also offering a lively depiction of their subjects. Kenneth Clark described the wonderful series of Thames paintings as embodying "the perfect moment of Impressionism." And yet, as his friend Arsene Alexandre said, "Sisley lived proud and died poor." His art gained full recognition only after his death, and even now his work is often overlooked. Richard Shone brings to this long-awaited book a fresh eye and an intimate knowledge of the Ile de France, the locale of many of Sisley's paintings. Shone's research has brought to light much new biographical information - on the artist's early career, his struggle to earn a living, and his secluded later years - all of which leads to a greater understanding of Sisley's artistic development. The many full-color illustrations include important series of paintings never before reproduced together in such quantity - the floods, the snow scenes, the church at Moret-sur-Loing, the Welsh coast. From this landmark book emerges a picture of a painter continually renewing his art, absorbing varied influences yet creating a personal vision of rural France that is as enduring and enchanting as the work of his fellow Impressionists. Richard Shone confirms the truth of Pissarro's description of Sisley as "a great and beautiful artist."
