The mechanism of speech : lectures delivered before the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf,
to which is appended a paper Vowel theories, read before the National Academy of Arts and Sciences by
Alexander Graham Bell(
Book
)
32 editions published between 1906 and 2018 in English and held by 358 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"These lectures upon the Mechanism of Speech were delivered at the First Summer Meeting of the American Association to Promote the Teaching of Speech to the Deaf, before an audience composed largely of persons professionally engaged in the work of teaching speech to deaf children. In 1906 these lectures were for the first time collected in book form and reprinted by the Association, chiefly for the use of its members, but enough copies were struck off to allow of the presentation of the work to the general public in the hope that it would prove of interest to a larger circle of readers. This hope was realized and there is now a demand for another edition. The first edition was printed during the author's absence in Europe, so that he had no opportunity of revising the proofs; and, unfortunately, in using the unfamiliar type representing Melville Bell's Speech-Symbols, the printers made quite a number of typographical mistakes. In this second edition advantage has been taken of the opportunity to correct these errors"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Memoir upon the formation of a deaf variety of the human race by
Alexander Graham Bell(
Book
)
26 editions published between 1883 and 2018 in English and held by 340 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A compilation of data on the hereditary aspects of deafness presented at a conference in 1883 by Alexander Graham Bell, the document contains records of familial occurences of deafness and marriage statistics. Tables indicate that within schools for the deaf many students had the same family name; it was considered highly probable that a considerable proportion of deaf mutes belonged to families containing more than one such person. Of 5,823 deaf mutes from various parts of the county, 29.5% were known to have deaf and dumb relatives. Records from two institutions showed that about one half of the students born before 1840 had married; of 1,089 from five schools who had married, an increased proportion had married other deaf mutes. Indications were found that a hereditary tendency toward deafness, as indicated by the possession of deaf relatives, was a most important element in determining the production of deaf offspring, and that the proportion of deaf mute children born to deaf mutes was many times greater than the proportion born to the people at large. Additional information is provided and includes charts, graphs, and family trees. (Rj)
