Concept, image, and symbol : the cognitive basis of grammar by Ronald W Langacker( )

43 editions published between 1990 and 2002 in 4 languages and held by 979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This research monograph develops and illustrates an innovative theory of linguistic structure, called ""cognitive grammar"", and applies it to representative phenomena in English and other languages. Cognitive grammar views language as an intergral fact of cognition and claims that grammatical structure cannot be understood or revealingly described independently of semantic considerations. It argues that grammar forms a continuum with the lexicon and is reducible to symbolic relationships (i.e. form-meaning pairings), and consequently that all valid grammatical constructs have some kind of con
Grammar and conceptualization by Ronald W Langacker( )

22 editions published between 1999 and 2010 in English and German and held by 809 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Grammar and Conceptualization documents some major developments in the theory of cognitive grammar during the last decade. By further articulating the framework and showing its application to numerous domains of linguistic structure, this book substantiates the claim that lexicon, morphology, and syntax form a gradation consisting of assemblies of symbolic structures (form-meaning pairings)

Essentials of cognitive grammar by Ronald W Langacker( )

16 editions published between 2012 and 2014 in English and held by 606 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ronald W. Langacker created an approach to linguistics called Cognitive Grammar, which is essentially a system of symbols that can be used to organize and analyze how semantics and phonology interact with each other in human language. Cognitive Grammar lays the groundwork for cognitive linguistics, which has become a major sub-field over the past 30 years. Langacker's 2008 OUP book Cognitive Grammar is the authoritative introduction to CG. But for an introduction it's rather long-584 pages, divided into four sections, two of which are truly introductory and two of which offer a more detailed methodology for researchers. This abridged version of Cognitive Grammar makes the two introductory sections available for course adoption at a reduced price. It will reinvigorate this copyright by tailoring it to the course market that has become its primary audience, and by positioning Langacker's authoritative work as an accessible, attractive cornerstone of cognitive linguistics as the field continues to evolve

Lessons in Hopi by Milo Kalectaca( Book )

7 editions published between 1977 and 1978 in English and Undetermined and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hopi, spoken in northern Arizona, is a member of the large Uto-Aztecan family of American Indian languages, which spreads over vast portions of the western United States and Mexico. The Hopi language textbook is directed at non-specialists who want to learn to speak Hopi or who simply want to learn something about the language. The content of the book consists of 30 lessons starting with the basic sounds of Hopi, covering fundamental points of Hopi grammar one by one, and leading the student to the construction of highly complex sentences. The grammatical material is introduced simply and with concrete illustrations at every point, and each lesson includes a variety of exercises with answers provided to help the student master the points presented. Interspersed with the lessons are 10 dialogs illustrating natural Hopi speech in specific situations. A limited amount of new vocabulary is introduced in each lesson and dialog. Hopi-English and English-Hopi lexicons summarize the vocabulary at the end of the volume. In addition, there are three short readings and four appendices pertaining to numbers, color terms, names of Hopi villages, and kinship terminology. (Erb)

Ten lectures on the elaboration of cognitive grammar by Ronald W Langacker( )

6 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 103 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book reviews the basic claims and descriptive constructs of Cognitive Grammar, outlines major themes in its ongoing development, and applies these notions to central problems in grammatical analysis. The initial review covers conceptual semantics, the conceptual characterization of grammatical categories, grammatical constructions, and the architecture of a unified theory of language structure. Main themes in the framework's development include the dynamicity of language structure, grammar as the implementation of semantic functions, systems of opposing elements to serve those functions, and organization in strata representing successive elaborations of a baseline structure. The descriptive application of these notions centers on nominal and clausal structure, with special emphasis on nominal grounding
Ten lectures on the basics of cognitive grammar by Ronald W Langacker( )

5 editions published in 2017 in English and held by 101 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

These lectures provide a basic introduction to the linguistic theory known as Cognitive Grammar. It is argued that a conceptualist semantics, well motivated in its own terms, provides the basis for a symbolic view of grammar. Consisting in the structuring and symbolization of conceptual content, grammar is inherently meaningful, and basic grammatical notions have conceptual characterizations. An account is given of grammatical categories, markings, and constructions. A number of central topics are examined in detail, including subjects, possessives, locatives, voice, and impersonals
