Teniendo en cuenta que nos ocupamos del título más representativo del llamado Género Chico en el teatro lirico español, que se considera, junto a La Revoltosa, las dos composiciones que sintetizan y atesoran lo mejor del sainete lírico propio de este género, la presente edición de una puesta en escena de La verbena de La Paloma es de gran utilidad para comprobar el camino a recorrer por la Dirección de Escena y el trabajo de dramaturgia que toda puesta en escena conlleva. De ese modo en este libro observaremos que en los primeros capítulos se nos informa de los materiales históricos y sociales que nos permite situarnos y comprender el periodo de existencia del género al que pertenece La verbena de La Paloma. También se nos informa de los orígenes del Género Chico, los teatros de Madrid donde tenían lugar las representaciones, así como las compañías encargadas de realizar las producciones más relevantes de este género. Igualmente el volumen aborda sobre el estreno del título que nos ocupa y estudia los artistas que estrenaron esta paradigmática obra. Finalmente, contiene esta edición el estudio dramatúrgico conducente a la puesta en escena que tuvo lugar en la Sala García Lorca del Gran teatro de La Habana en una producción del Teatro Lírico Nacional de Cuba estrenada en noviembre de 2002, presenta el libreto con las anotaciones de dirección de escena e incluye unas notas sobre el resultado de la versión y estreno de este evento
