German autumn by Stig Dagerman( )

16 editions published between 1988 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 919 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In late 1946, Stig Dagerman was assigned by the Swedish newspaper Expressen to report on life in Germany immediately after the fall of the Third Reich. First published in Sweden in 1947, German Autumn, a collection of the articles written for that assignment, was unlike any other reporting at the time. While most Allied and foreign journalists spun their writing on the widely held belief that the German people deserved their fate, Dagerman disagreed and reported on the humanness of the men and women ruined by the war-their guilt and suffering. Dagerman was already a prominent writer in Sweden
Island of the doomed by Stig Dagerman( )

12 editions published between 1991 and 2012 in English and held by 858 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A haunting tale that oscillates around seven castaways as they await their inevitable death on a desert island populated by blind gulls and hordes of iguanas. At the center of the island is a poisonous lagoon, where a strange fish swims in circles and devours anything in its path. As we are taken into the lives of each castaway, it becomes clear that Dagerman's true subject is the nature of horror itself
A burnt child; a novel by Stig Dagerman( )

97 editions published between 1948 and 2015 in 7 languages and held by 837 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Set in a working-class neighborhood in Stockholm, the story revolves around a young man named Bengt who falls into deep, private turmoil with the unexpected death of his mother. As he struggles to cope with her loss, his despair slowly transforms to rage when he discovers his father had a mistress. But as Bengt swears revenge on behalf of his mother's memory, he also finds himself drawn into a fevered and conflicted relationship with this woman--a turn that causes him to question his previous faith in morality, virtue, and fidelity. Written in a taut and beautifully naturalistic tone, Dagerman illuminates the rich atmospheres of Bengt's life, both internal and eternal: from his heartache and fury to the moody streets of Stockholm and the Hitchcockian shadows of tension and threat in the woods and waters of Sweden's remote islands. A Burnt Child remains Dagerman's most widely read novel, both in Sweden and worldwide, and is one of the crowning works of his short but celebrated career"--Summary
Wedding worries by Stig Dagerman( Book )

79 editions published between 1949 and 2019 in 7 languages and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Considered by many to be Stig Dagerman's magnum opus, Wedding Worries spans the twenty-four hours of Hildur Palm's wedding day and night, beginning with an ominous knock on her door before sunrise and ending after a fitful night with an uncertain look into her future with her new husband, the village butcher. Characterized by its stream of consciousness style and perspective shifts between a colorful variety of characters, this novel oscillates between chaotic burlesque and sharp meditation, tackling themes of loneliness, suffering, and the human capacity to make do with unalterable circumstances, set against the backdrop of rural Sweden." --

This is a superb collection of stories by Stig Dagerman, one of the most talented writers of Sweden's post-war generation. Stig Dagerman (1923-1954) is regarded as the most talented young writer of the Swedish post-war generation. By the 1940s, his fiction, plays, and journalism had catapulted him to the forefront of Swedish letters, with critics comparing him to William Faulkner, Franz Kafka, and Albert Camus. His suicide at the age of thirty-one was a national tragedy. This selection, containing a number of new translations of Dagerman's stories never before published in English, is unified by the theme of the loss of innocence. Often narrated from a child's perspective, the stories give voice to childhood's tender state of receptiveness and joy tinged with longing and loneliness. The title story, To Kill A Child, is the most famous of Dagerman's short stories and among the most anthologized and oft-read stories in Sweden
Europa in Ruinen Augenzeugenberichte aus den Jahren 1944 - 1948 by Stig Dagerman( Book )

14 editions published between 1990 and 2013 in German and Spanish and held by 75 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

L'ENFANT BRULE by Stig Dagerman( Book )

10 editions published between 1956 and 2011 in French and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
