"Wenn man in den Kunstwissenschaften zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ausgetretene Pfade des Denkens verlassen wollte, bedeutete dies, die Entstehungsbedingungen in den Fokus zu rücken, immer stringent vom Bild ausgehend zu denken, das von der Stilgeschichte vereinnahmte Objekt als Erkenntnisinstrument wahrzunehmen. Diese Vorgehensweise verfolgte auch Frederick Antal. In den späten 1930er Jahren wurde er durch sozialgeschichtlich ausgerichtete Arbeiten bekannt, die ihm, zeittypisch, den Ruf eines politischen, eines linken± Kunsthistorikers einbrachten, was die Wahrnehmung seiner Forschungen nachhaltig und keineswegs zu seinem Vorteil geprägt hat. Umso interessanter ist der vorliegende, erstmals publizierte Text, den Antal 1914 in Wien als Dissertation einreichte. Seine Kernfrage lautet, wie sich Meinungen in Gesellschaften herausbilden, die von sozialen Schichten bzw. von den Grenzen zwischen diesen geprägt werden. Antal gelingt es, die landläufig als Gegenüber verhandelten Formeln Romantik± und Realismus± in ihren Verzahnungen zu sehen und das Bild als ein zentrales Objekt darzustellen, das mittels der präsentierten Motive ein eigenaktiver Teil der Meinungsbildung wurde."--P.
