A young member of the Croatian Ustachi is slowly destroyed by forces unleashed during World War II. For political reasons he is ultimately transformed into a hero. Director Jancso's film consists of twelve shots each carefully choreographed utilizing the complex tracking shots which became the signature style of his cinema; a style of filmmaking demanding precise planning and exacting work from both cast and crew
