Dessutom påtog han sig frivilligt en hel rad vetenskapliga forskningsuppgifter. Mannerhiem var den rätta personen för denna krävande färd. Han var en god ryttare, fysiskt uthållig och van vid strapatser. Han var en skarpögd iakttagare, som ingenting undgick, han hade ett vaket intellekt och både humor och fantasi. Alla dessa egenskaper behövde han mer än väl under sin fjortonhundramilaritt, som räckte inte mindre än två år. Denna ritt var en sportprestation, som redan den borde ha varit tillräcklig för att göra namnet Mannerheim välkänt. Han kom ensam av de startande fram till Peking, sedan de övriga deltagarna en efter en fått ge upp och ersättas av andra. Mannerheims dagboksanteckningar publicerades 1940 i engelsk översättning och samma år i en fullständig svensk originalupplaga, och slutligen 1942 i en av professor Kaarlo Hildén något förkortad version. I föreliggande upplaga har etnografiska specialbeskrivningar, militära förhållanden, upprepningar och dylikt skurits bort med varsam hand av Göran Schildt. Nu kvarstår en frisk och intressant reseskildring, som ger en skarp och tydlig bild av det fjärran Asien, som väl alltid fascinerat oss. [Elib]
