The basic concepts and methods of matroid theory are presented. The Memorandum defines a matroid axiomatically and introduces the matroids associated with the structures of graphs and chaingroups. It discusses the subgraphs and contractions of a graph, exhibits corresponding simplifications of chaingroups and matroids, and studies the rank of a matroid. It also examines a property of matroids called connection and shows that it corresponds to the property of nonseparability for graphs. It further treats the detailed structure of a matroid (that is, it studies the relation between a given circuit and the rest of the matroid), and concludes by considering the regular matroids and their associated chaingroups. The regular matroids mark an interesting halfway stage between the matroids corresponding to graphs on the one hand, and the binary matroids, corresponding to chaingroups over GF(2), on the other

To most graph theorists there are two outstanding landmarks in the history of their subject. One is Euler's solution of the Konigsberg Bridges Problem, dated 1736, and the other is the appearance of Denes Konig's textbook in 1936. "From Konigsberg to Konig's book" sings the poetess, "So runs the graphic tale ..." [10]. There were earlier books that took note of graph theory. Veb len's Analysis Situs, published in 1931, is about general combinato rial topology. But its first two chapters, on "Linear graphs" and "TwoDimensional Complexes", are almost exclusively concerned with the territory still explored by graph theorists. Rouse Ball's Mathematical Recreations and Essays told, usually without proofs, of the major graphtheoretical advances ofthe nineteenth century, of the Five Colour Theorem, of Petersen's Theorem on Ifactors, and of Cayley's enumerations of trees. It was Rouse Ball's book that kindled my own graphtheoretical enthusiasm. The graphtheoretical papers of Hassler Whitney, published in 19311933, would have made an excellent textbook in English had they been collected and published as such. But the honour of presenting Graph Theory to the mathe matical world as a subject in its own right, with its own textbook, belongs to Denes Konig. Low was the prestige of Graph Theory in the Dirty Thirties. It is still remembered, with resentment now shading into amuse ment, how one mathematician scorned it as "The slums of Topol ogy."

The task is to enumerate combinatorially distinct rooted bipartite planar maps in which each vertex, with the possible exception of the rootvertex, is trivalent. Two almost bicubic rooted maps are combinatorially equivalent if there is a homeomorphism of the surface onto itself which (1) transforms the vertices, edges, and faces of one map into the vertices, edges, and faces of the other and (2) preserves the rootvertex, its incident edge and/or face. Two such maps are counted as distinct if and only if they are not combinatorially equivalent. Suppose (V1, V2) is a bipartition of the vertex set with the rootvertex in V1. A general formula is established for the number of distinct maps qmn with m = the valency of the rootvertex and n = the number of vertices in V2. (Author)
