Recurrence in ergodic theory and combinatorial number theory by
Harry Furstenberg(
Book
)
20 editions published between 1981 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Topological dynamics and ergodic theory usually have been treated independently. H. Furstenberg, instead, develops the common ground between them by applying the modern theory of dynamical systems to combinatories and number theory.Originally published in 1981.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest printondemand technology to again make available previously outofprint books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These paperback editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

Ergodic theory and fractal geometry by
Harry Furstenberg(
Book
)
11 editions published in 2014 in English and Undetermined and held by 192 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Fractals are beautiful and complex geometric objects. Their study, pioneered by Benoît Mandelbrot, is of interest in mathematics, physics and computer science. Their inherent structure, based on their selfsimilarity, makes the study of their geometry amenable to dynamical approaches. In this book, a theory along these lines is developed by Hillel Furstenberg, one of the foremost experts in ergodic theory, leading to deep results connecting fractal geometry, multiple recurrence, and Ramsey theory. In particular, the notions of fractal dimension and selfsimilarity are interpreted in terms of e

Investigations in harmonic analysis, ergodic theory, and related topics in analysis(
Book
)
2 editions published between 1970 and 1971 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The report describes problems belonging to classical Fourier analysis. These involve properties of certain Banach spaces of functions on the circle which are defined in terms of the Fourier series of the functions. Harmonic analysis is also used to sharpen a theorem in ergodic theory. The main result proved is that any ergodic automorphism of the torus is measuretheoretically isomorphic to a Bernoulli shift. This was known to be true under added conditions on the eigenvalues of the automorphism. The original methods depended heavily on the geometry of the torus and did not lend themselves to generalization to other compact abelian groups. The present method is more powerful and should generalize to other groups. The authors also use notions of ergodic theory as a tool in group theory. A group is studied in terms of the manner in which it can act on a compact space. These notions are useful in the theory of discrete subgroups of a Lie group. Finally, the authors consider the regularity of solutions to elliptic differential equations. (Author)
