?On War? - Vom Kriege (German pronunciation: is a book on war and military strategy by Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831), written mostly after the Napoleonic wars, between 1816 and 1830, and published posthumously by his wife Marie von Brühl in 1832. It has been translated into English several times as On War. On War is actually an unfinished work; Clausewitz had set about revising his accumulated manuscripts in 1827, but did not live to finish the task. His wife edited his collected works and published them between 1832 and 1835. His 10-volume collected works contain most of his larger historical and theoretical writings, though not his shorter articles and papers or his extensive correspondence with important political, military, intellectual and cultural leaders in the Prussian state. On War is formed by the first three volumes and represents his theoretical explorations. It is one of the most important treatises on political-military analysis and strategy ever written, and remains both controversial and an influence on strategic thinking. (Excerpt from Wikipedia)

Principles of war by
Carl von Clausewitz(
Book
)
49 editions published between 1889 and 2014 in 5 languages and held by 782 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Written two centuries ago by a Prussian military thinker, this is the most frequently cited, the most controversial, and in many ways, the most modern book on warfare ... Principles of war examines moral and psychological aspects of warfare, stressing the necessity of such qualities as courage, audacity, and self-sacrifice, and the importance of morale and public opinion. Clausewitz emphasizes the notion of strategy as an evolving plan, rather than a formula, a concept adaptable to modern strategists in fields beyond military science

On Victory and Defeat : From "On War." by
Carl von Clausewitz(
)
6 editions published between 1989 and 2014 in English and held by 314 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The seemingly endless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have renewed the age-old debate over what constitutes military victory. Will the withdrawal of troops from Iraq and Afghanistan be seen as a sign of victory or defeat? Although the nature of warfare has changed dramatically since Clausewitz's On War was first written, this selection from his classic work remains an invaluable source of insight for understanding what it means to achieve victory in war and how to recognize defeat. Princeton Shorts are brief selections excerpted from influential Princeton University Press publications produced exclusively in eBook format. They are selected with the firm belief that while the original work remains an important and enduring product, sometimes we can all benefit from a quick take on a topic worthy of a longer book. In a world where every second counts, how better to stay up-to speed on current events and digest the kernels of wisdom great works of the past? Princeton Shorts enables you to be an instant expert in a world where information is everywhere but quality is at a premium. On Victory and Defeat does just that

On Wellington : a critique of Waterloo by
Carl von Clausewitz(
Book
)
9 editions published between 2010 and 2014 in English and held by 297 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Clausewitz, the Western world's most renown military theorist, participated in the Waterloo campaign as a senior staff officer in the Prussian Army. His appraisal, offered here in an up-to-date and readable translation, criticized the Duke of Wellington's actions. Lord Liverpool sent his translation of the manuscript to Wellington, who pronounced it a 'lying work'. The translated commentary was quickly buried in Wellington's private papers, where it languished for a century and a half. Now published for the first time in English, Hofschröer brings Clausewitz's critique back into view with thorough annotation and contextual explanation"--Jacket

Carl von Clausewitz: two letters on strategy by
Carl von Clausewitz(
)
4 editions published between 1984 and 1994 in English and held by 256 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This edition of Carl von Clausewitz's Two Letters on Strategy was made possible by the Army War College Foundation and by the Art of War Colloquium of the Army War College, which sponsors the volume as part of its program of republishing military classics for the professional development of the officer corps. The Army War College wishes to express its gratitude to the co-editors and translators, Professor Peter Paret, Spruance Professor of International History at Stanford University, and Dr. Daniel Moran. In recent years, Carl von Clausewitz's On War has attracted many new readers in this country, stimulated in large part by the publication in 1976 of a new translation and edition of the work by Professors Michael Howard and Peter Paret. Generally readers have concentrated on Clausewitz's philosophy, theory, and strategic concepts, as developed in Books One, Two, Three, and Eight of On War. His views on operations, on the other hand, have been largely neglected. The present work provides us with an opportunity to study Clausewitz's thinking on operational issues in a specific strategic context. Two Letters on Strategy deals with the planning and conduct of a campaign, based on problems set by the Chief of Prussian General Staff in 1827

Napoleon's 1796 Italian campaign by
Carl von Clausewitz(
)
5 editions published in 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 246 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Prussian general Carl von Clausewitz (1780-1831) is considered one of the greatest military theorists and historians of the modern era. While he is best known for the monumental Vom Krieg (On War), he wrote several other important works, one of which is Der Feldzug von 1796 in Italien (The 1796 Italian Campaign). It was published in 1833, two years after Clausewitz's death. The Italian Campaign was a crucial episode in the wars of the French Revolution and cemented Napoleon's reputation as a military genius, but Clausewitz's history has been relatively neglected, primarily because it has never been translated into English. Murray and Pringle's translation will make accessible in English one of the most important campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars and will provide students, scholars, and others with a tool for more effective and accurate textual analysis of Clausewitz's theoretical writings"--

On war by
Carl von Clausewitz(
)
18 editions published between 1976 and 2013 in English and held by 161 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A Prussian soldier and writer, Clausewitz is said to have distilled Napoleon into theory. Perhaps best known among his numerous pronouncements is that war is a continuation of politics by other means. His theories and observations in this work have been heeded by military strategists for nearly 200 years. Many have considered this to be the "Bible" of military strategy and tactics. This abridged version of Clausewitz's magnum opus follows the text of the New and Revised Edition (edited by F.N. Maude in 1908) of Col. J.J. Graham's translation. Of the original three volumes, this version includes all of Volume I (except for the last chapter on night fighting) and six of the nine chapters of Book Eight of Volume III (The Plan of War). The editor's objective in this abridgement was to select those portions of the work which most closely relate to our own time
