17 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and held by 1,369 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the first handbook to cover comprehensively both software engineering and knowledge engineering - two important fields that have become interwoven in recent years. Over 60 international experts have contributed to the book. Each chapter has been written in such a way that a practitioner of software engineering and knowledge engineering can easily understand and obtain useful information. Each chapter covers one topic and can be read independently of other chapters, providing both a general survey of the topic and an in-depth exposition of the state of the art
Symbolic projection for image information retrieval and spatial reasoning by S. K Chang( )

16 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 1,341 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Information systems with an abundance of graphics data are growing rapidly due to advances in data storage technology, the development of multimedia communications across networks, and the fact that parallel computers are leading to faster image processing systems. This book addresses image information retrieval and spatial reasoning using an approach called Symbolic Projection, which supports descriptions of the image content on the basis of the spatial relationships between the pictorial objects. Image information systems have a wide variety of applications, including information retrieval on the World Wide Web, medical pictorial archiving, computer-aided design, robotics, and geographical information systems, and this book is comprehensively illustrated with examples from these areas. Symbolic Projection now forms the basis of an enormous number and range of information retrieval algorithms, and also supports query-by-picture and qualitative spatial reasoning. Both authors are international experts in the field, and the book will serve as an excellent source for those working in multimedia systems and image information systems who wish to find out more about this exciting area. Key Features * An all-inclusive source to the field--all you need to know * S-K. Chang is the leading authority in this field, which he pioneered * Includes a wide variety of applications, including information retrieval on the World Wide Web, computer-aided design, and geographical information systems

Fuzzy sets : theory and applications to policy analysis and information systems by Paul P Wang( Book )

18 editions published in 1980 in English and Undetermined and held by 405 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As the systems which form the fabric of modern society become more complex and more interdependent, the need for the understanding of the behavior of such systems becomes increasingly more essential. What are the causes and possible cures for the worldwide inflation which is posing a serious threat to the economic stability and social order of both developed and underdeveloped countries? What are the trade-offs between the urgent need for additional sources of energy and the risks posed by the proliferation of nuclear reactors? How can one devise mass transportation systems which are fast, comforta ble, convenient, and yet not prohibitively expensive? These issues are but some of the more visible problems posed by what might be called the crisis of undercoordination--a crisis rooted in the widen ing gap between the degree of interdependence in the systems of modern society and the degree of coordination which libertarian societies are willing to tolerate. The disquieting implication of this crisis is that to achieve stability through coordination may necessitate the imposition of pervasive controls which may be hard to accept by societies steeped in the democratic tradition. Viewed in this perspective, the need for developing a better understanding of the behavior of large-scale societal systems presents a problem of much more than purely academic importance

Management and office information systems by S. K Chang( Book )

11 editions published in 1984 in English and held by 300 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Decision making is a very complex phenomenon. Modern decision makers must deal with very complex problems which are constantly changing and often ill structured, making modeling and analysis difficult. In order to provide support for the decision makers, computer-based information systems are designed to collect, store, process, and transport information. Recent advances in computer technol ogy, data communications, database systems, office automation, and knowledge engineering have made possible the design of very sophisticated information sys tems. However, rapid technological advances also create many problems, not the least of which is the lack of integration among the various disciplines in infor mation system design. Without such integration, a costly computer-based infor mation system is at best partially useful and at worst totally useless. The aim of this book, therefore, is to examine the various issues involved in designing man agement information systems, decision support systems, and office information systems for increasing productivity and providing decision support. This book is the outcome of the Workshop on Management and Office Infor mation Systems, which was organized by the Knowledge Systems Institute and held at Chicago, Illinois, from June 28 to 30, 1982. Twenty-seven papers from the working papers presented at that workshop were selected for inclusion in the present volume, which is organized into five parts: (I) organization structures and management, (II) decision support systems, (III) database systems, (IV) office information systems, and (V) systems and applications
Languages for automation by S. K Chang( Book )

12 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 290 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two central ideas in the movement toward advanced automation systems are the office-of-the-future (or office automation system), and the factory of-the-future (or factory automation system). An office automation system is an integrated system with diversified office equipment, communication devices, intelligent terminals, intelligent copiers, etc., for providing information management and control in a dis tributed office environment. A factory automation system is also an inte grated system with programmable machine tools, robots, and other pro cess equipment such as new "peripherals," for providing manufacturing information management and control. Such advanced automation systems can be regarded as the response to the demand for greater variety, greater flexibility, customized designs, rapid response, and 'Just-in-time" delivery of office services or manufac tured goods. The economy of scope, which allows the production of a vari ety of similar products in random order, gradually replaces the economy of scale derived from overall volume of operations. In other words, we are gradually switching from the production of large volumes of standard products to systems for the production of a wide variety of similar products in small batches. This is the phenomenon of "demassification" of the marketplace, as described by Alvin Toffier in The Third Wave

"Multimedia has two fundamental characteristics that can be expressed by the following formula: Multimedia = Multiple Media + Hypermedia. How can software engineering take advantage of these two characteristics? Will these two characteristics pose problems in multimedia systems design? These are some of the issues to be explored in this book." "Multimedia Software Engineering can be used as a textbook in a graduate course on multimedia software engineering or in an undergraduate course on software design where the emphasis is on multimedia applications. It is especially suitable for a project-oriented course."--Jacket

Advances in distributed multimedia systems( Book )

8 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The last few years have seen an explosive growth in multimedia computing, communications and applications. This revolution is transforming the way people live, work, and interact with one another, and is impacting the way businesses, government services, education, entertainment, and health care are operating. It is safe to say that the multimedia revolution is underway. Yet, several issues related to modeling, specification, analysis and design of distributed multimedia systems and applications are still challenging both researchers and practitioners. This book addresses fundamental design issues and research topics, related to multimedia systems, and provides a comprehensive study of the issues. The topics covered include: distributed multimedia databases and computing; multiparadigmatic information retrieval; modeling and analysis of distributed multimedia systems; OS support for distributed multimedia systems; multimedia communications and networking; multimedia digital libraries and mail systems; multimedia human-computer interaction; multimedia applications for CSCW, distant education, electronic commerce teleconferencing, telemedicine; visual and multidimensional languages for multimedia applications; multimedia workflows; multimedia stream synchronization. In addition, a number of tutorial and overview articles are included so that the volume strikes a balance between introductory tutorials and advanced topics
