Mary and her mother were very close, but the two were kept separated by Henry VIII during his estrangement and divorce, so Mary got to see very little of her mother in her later years. Catherine was a devout Catholic and passed that devotion onto her daughter Mary

Paintings of the six wives of Henry VIII. Henry divorced his first wife,Catherine of Aragon, in order to marry Anne Boleyn. After he executed Anne Boleyn for apparent treason and adultery, he married Jane Seymour and she gave birth to his only legitimate son, Edward. Jane soon died after Edward's birth, and Henry married Anne of Cleaves for a short time, then divorced her. He became entranced with Catherine Howard and soon married her, but accusations of adultery had her later beheaded. Henry then married Catherine Parr, a wealthy and older widow, who nursed the aging and ailing Henry with grace until his death in 1547. They are pictured, from left to right: Catherine of Aragon, Anne Boleyn, Jane Seymour, Anne of Cleaves, Catherine Howard and Catherine Parr
