Human and mammalian cytogenetics : an historical perspective by T. C Hsu( Book )

19 editions published in 1979 in English and German and held by 623 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The history of science is mostly written retrospec tively, a generation or two after the actual events being discussed. Science historians are now analyzing and evaluating the origins of evolutionary and genetical theory in the nineteenth century and a sort of "Darwin industry" seems to have grown up. A history of mammalian cytogenetics by one of the main participants is, hence, a very welcome change, since it has a vividness, an immediacy and a personal flavor which these scholarly tomes and the official biog raphies of scientists mostly lack. The life of the author, Chinese-born, T.C. Hsu, has been a romantic and color ful one, and he is himself a unique personality, so that his book is a very unusual blend of reminiscences, history of his special field (which has transformed human genetics) and wise comments on the mistakes made along the way. The best qualities of a very fine Chinese mind have contributed to Dr. Hsu's career, including this book. Those qualities (which seem to me especially Chinese) include a kind of transparent honesty, a very direct em pirical approach to problems and superb technical ability

Since the inception of the Atlas of Mammalian Chromosomes, it is a surprise to us that we have finished five volumes with karyotypes of nearly 250 mam malian species. We acknowledge the fact that there are many imperfections in this series, but we also hope that these volumes have been useful to various investigators. Springer-Verlag has made a binder which will accommodate the material of all five volumes. We also revised our index to facilitate easy reference. If the material is arranged in the binder according to the Cumulative Contents, we believe one will find it convenient to consult with this book. Volume 5, as in the previous volumes, contains a Cumulative Index, Cumu lative Table of Contents, as well as an individual Index and Table of Contents for Volume 5. Previous Indices and Tables of Contents should be discarded. October, 1970 T.C. Hsu Kurt Benirschke v Instructions A special vinyl binder is available from the publisher which will accommo. date the material of the first five volumes. Twenty dividers have been provided with printed tabs. These dividers are intended to separate the Orders and the Index. It is suggested that the dividers be placed in the following sequence of Orders, which sequence will be followed in the future when presenting karyo

Aneuploidy : etiology and mechanisms by Vicki L Dellarco( )

2 editions published between 1985 and 1986 in English and held by 43 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The "Symposium on Aneuploidy: Etiology and Mechanisms" was held at the Carnegie Institution of Washington Auditorium from March 25-29. 1985. This Symposium developed as a consequence of the concern of the Environmen tal Protection Agency with the support of the National Institute of Envi ronmental Health Sciences about human exposure to environmental agents that cause aneuploidy. The program was chosen to explore what is currently known about the underlying causes, the origins, and the extent of the prob lem of human aneuploidy, and whether exposure to environmental agents is assodated with an increased incidence of aneuploidy in humans. Basic research findings in the area of mitosis and meiosis were presented and related to possible mechanisms of how aneuploidy may be produced spontane ously and chemically. A survey of data regarding the chemical induction of aneuploidy in experimental organisms was presented. Outstanding scientists from different fields were invited to cover a broad perspective of aneu ploidy from the molecular aspects to the human situation. We hope that the publication of the proceedings will share the enthu siasm of the meeting and its scientific content. The topic of aneuploidy has received little attention and it is the purpose of this Volume to establish a scientific basis for assessing health risks posed by environ mental exposures to aneuploidy-inducing chemicals.
