When Oedipus, King of Thebes, realized he had married his own mother and had two sons and two daughters with her, he blinded himself and cursed his sons to divide their inheritance (the kingdom) by the sword. To avoid bloodshed his sons Eteocles and Polynices agreed to rule Thebes in alternate years. As the play begins, Eteocles has refused to step down, thus Polynices raises an army of to take Thebes by force. Polynices and his Argive army approach the city of Thebes with seven captains--one assigned to each of the seven gates--where they will meet the corresponding Theban commanders Eteocles sends in single combat. When Polynices is revealed to be commander the seventh gate, Eteocles resolves to fight his brother in person
