Differential equations, dynamical systems, and an introduction to chaos by Morris W Hirsch( )

53 editions published between 2003 and 2016 in English and Chinese and held by 2,062 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This text is about the dynamical aspects of ordinary differential equations and the relations between dynamical systems and certain fields outside pure mathematics. It is an update of one of Academic Press's most successful mathematics texts ever published, which has become the standard textbook for graduate courses in this area. The authors are tops in the field of advanced mathematics. Steve Smale is a Field's Medalist, which equates to being a Nobel prize winner in mathematics. Bob Devaney has authored several leading books in this subject area. Linear algebra prerequisites toned down from first edition Inclusion of analysis of examples of chaotic systems, including Lorenz, Rosssler, and Shilnikov systems Bifurcation theory included throughout
Differential equations, dynamical systems, and linear algebra by Morris W Hirsch( Book )

28 editions published between 1974 and 2014 in English and held by 1,249 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is about dynamical aspects of ordinary differential equations and the relations between dynamical systems and certain fields outside pure mathematics. A prominent role is played by the structure theory of linear operators on finite-dimensional vector spaces; the authors have included a self-contained treatment of that subject
Foundations of computational mathematics : proceedings of the Smalefest 2000, Hong Kong, 13-17, 2000 by J. Maurice Rojas( )

8 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 901 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This invaluable book contains 19 papers selected from those submitted to a conference held in Hong Kong in July 2000 to celebrate the 70th birthday of Professor Steve Smale. It may be regarded as a continuation of the proceedings of SMALEFEST 1990 ("From Topology to Computation") held in Berkeley, USA, 10 years before, but with the focus on the area in which Smale worked more intensively during the '90's, namely the foundations of computational mathematics

Essays in mathematics and its applications : in honor of Stephen Smale's 80th birthday by P. M Pardalos( )

5 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

{U200B}The volume is dedicated to Stephen Smale on the occasion of his 80th birthday. Besides his startling 1960 result of the proof of the Poincaré conjecture for all dimensions greater than or equal to five, Smale{u2019}s ground breaking contributions invarious fields in Mathematics have marked the second part of the 20th century and beyond. Stephen Smale has done pioneering work in differential topology, global analysis, dynamical systems, nonlinear functional analysis, numerical analysis, theory of computation and machine learning as well as applications in the physical and biological sciences and economics. In sum, Stephen Smale has manifestly broken the barriers among the different fields of mathematics and dispelled some remaining prejudices. He is indeed a universal mathematician. Smale has been honored with several prizes and honorary degrees including, among others, the Fields Medal(1966), The Veblen Prize (1966), the National Medal of Science (1996) and theWolf Prize (2006/2007)
The mathematics of numerical analysis : 1995 AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics, July 17-August 11, 1995, Park City, Utah by AMS-SIAM Summer Seminar in Applied Mathematics( Book )

10 editions published between 1995 and 1996 in English and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From topology to computation : proceedings of the Smalefest by Morris W Hirsch( Book )

12 editions published between 1990 and 2012 in English and held by 211 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume is a Festschrift for Stephen Smale's 60th birthday; most of the chapters are based on papers given at a symposium in his honor at the University of California at Berkeley. The contributions reflect the breadth of Smale's interests, ranging over a wide variety of fields in pure and applied mathematics. In addition, Smale has provided an autobiographical essay, as well as a record of the lively panel discussions at the symposium. The research contributions include papers on differential topology, mathematical economics, dynamical systems, on the theory of computation, on nonlinear functional analysis, and on various applications in the physical and biological sciences. All are currently active areas of interdisciplinary research

The classical theory of computation has its origins in the work of Goedel, Turing, Church, and Kleene and has been an extraordinarily successful framework for theoretical computer science. The thesis of this book, however, is that it provides an inadequate foundation for modern scientific computation where most of the algorithms are real number algorithms. The goal of this book is to develop a formal theory of computation which integrates major themes of the classical theory and which is more directly applicable to problems in mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing. Along the way, the authors consider such fundamental problems as: * Is the Mandelbrot set decidable? * For simple quadratic maps, is the Julia set a halting set? * What is the real complexity of Newton's method? * Is there an algorithm for deciding the knapsack problem in a ploynomial number of steps? * Is the Hilbert Nullstellensatz intractable? * Is the problem of locating a real zero of a degree four polynomial intractable? * Is linear programming tractable over the reals? The book is divided into three parts: The first part provides an extensive introduction and then proves the fundamental NP-completeness theorems of Cook-Karp and their extensions to more general number fields as the real and complex numbers. The later parts of the book develop a formal theory of computation which integrates major themes of the classical theory and which is more directly applicable to problems in mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computing
Global analysis : [Proceedings of the Symposium in Pure Mathematics of the American Mathematical Society held at the University of California, Berkeley, California, july 1-26, 1968] by American Mathematical Society( Book )

The story of the higher dimensional Poincaré conjecture : what actually happened on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro by Stephen Smale( Visual )

6 editions published between 1989 and 2009 in English and held by 37 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Recorded in Phoenix, Ariz. on January 11, 1989, Smale talks about Poincare conjecture and the controversy about his proof. He presents personal experiences surrounding his work and its relationship to government policies. The discrimination he endured and the support provided by his mathematical colleagues offer an intriguing glimpse into the way politics can influence science policy
