"The Golden Ass by Apuleius is a unique, entertaining, and thoroughly readable Latin novel - the only work of fiction in Latin to have survived in entirety from antiquity. It tells the story of the hero Lucius, whose curiosity and fascination for sex and magic results in his transformation into an ass. After suffering a series of trials and humiliations, he is ultimately transformed back into human shape by the kindness of the Goddess Isis. Simultaneously a blend of romantic adventure, fable, and religious testament, the Golden Ass is one of the truly seminal books of European Literature, of intrinsic interest as a novel in its own right, and one of the earliest examples of the picaresque. It includes as its famous centrepiece the myth of Cupid and Psyche, the search of the human soul for union with the divine, and has been the inspiration for numerous creative works of literature and art since the Renaissance." "This new translation is at once faithful to the meaning of the Latin, whilst reproducing all the exuberant gaiety of the original."--Jacket

Apuleius(
Book
)
92 editions published between 1950 and 2014 in English and held by 1,596 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Lucius Apuleius, a young man of good parentage, takes a trip to Thessaly. Along the way, amidst a series of bizarre adventures, he inadvertently offends a priestess of the White Goddess, who promptly turns him into an ass. How Lucius responds to his new misfortune, and ultimately finds a way to become human again, makes for a funny and fascinating tale. The Metamorphosis of Apuleius, referred to by St. Augustine as The Golden Ass, is the oldest novel written in Latin to survive in its entirety. Originally written by Lucius of Patrae, this translation by Robert Graves highlights the ribald humor and vivid sense of adventure present in the original. Providing a rare window in to the daily lives of regular people in ancient Greece, Robert Graves' translation of this classic tale is at once hilarious, informative, and captivating

" ... tells the tale of a certain Lucius, a young man who -- rather like his creator -- leads an itinerant life full of action and incident which ultimately lands him in trouble. His curiosity to discover the secrets of witchcraft (the biographical echoes continue) results in his metamorphosis into an ass. The novel then follows its unfortunate hero through a series of largely bruising, humiliating and hilarious exploits until he is restored to human form through the intervention of the goddess Isis."--Publisher's website

Apuleius : rhetorical works by
Apuleius(

)
13 editions published between 1510 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 20 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"These rhetorical texts by Apuleius, second-century Latin writer and author of the famous novel Metamorphoses or Golden Ass, have not been translated in English since 1909. They are some of the very few Latin speeches surviving from their period, and constitute important evidence for Latin and Roman North African social and intellectual culture in the second century A.D. They are the work of a talented writer who is being increasingly viewed as the major literary artist of his time in Latin." "The Apologia, Apuleius' self-defence against a charge of magic delivered in North Africa in A.D. 158-9, has been well described as 'a masterpiece of the Second Sophistic'. It is a brilliant, lively, and colourful piece and is the only Latin forensic oration preserved from the second century A.D., providing important evidence for contemporary North African life." "The Florida ('flowery pieces') is a collection of excerpts deriving from an earlier anthology of Apuleian speeches, most apparently delivered at Carthage in the 160s A.D. As a whole, these passages offer a unique view of the rhetorical practice of a performing intellectual in Latin in the second century A.D. They also give important information on civic life in Carthage through their treatment of proconsuls and the local senate." "The De Deo Socratis, probably also from the 160s, is an oration in the form of a popular philosophical lecture on the 'god' of Socrates, the inner voice which, according to Plato, advised him. This is the only surviving sophistic declamation in Latin. The material is treated brilliantly by Apuleius, being much ornamented with poetic quotation and rhetorical and stylistic pyrotechnics."--Jacket

Pasquale J Accardo(

"The Metamorphosis of Apuleius traces two millennia of changes in the major inserted tale in the second century Metamorphoses (or Golden Ass), the only classical Latin novel to survive in a complete text. This most charming "Tale of Cupid and Psyche" was both popular in its own day and became the subject of allegorical intepretation into the Dark Ages. However, it became lost in the Middle Ages, probably in part because of the parent novel's fairly explicit eroticism and militant paganism (not counting its possible anti-Christian jibes). Resurfacing in the Renaissance from a single surviving manuscript, it again became the subject of allegorization and spawned a large number of translations and adaptations which have continued up to the present day, with C.S. Lewis's Till We Have Faces being only one of the more notable recent retellings."--Jacket
