The elegant universe( Visual )

1 edition published in 2003 in English and held by 1,582 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

String theory calls for at least ten dimensions in order for its rather abstruse mathematics to remain consistent. However, in 1995, Edward Witten of Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study, revolutionized string theory by successfully uniting the five different versions into a single theory, cryptically named "M-theory". It was a development requiring a total of eleven dimensions. In this program, we explore how this new dimension is different from all the others, as it implies that strings can come in higher dimensional shapes called membranes, or "branes" for short. Having truly science-fiction-like qualities, branes can be as large as the universe - or even present as a parallel universe - one we may be living on one right now. It is one of the most startling views at our existence through the curious lens of physics

When he ascended the throne, Catherine plotted his overthrow, took power, and began to pull her country out of the dark ages. She led Russia for 30 years, creating an enviable dynasty build on cunning and ruthlessness, in addition to newfound notions of justice, progress, and a centralized government. Ahead of her time, Catherine the Great stands as a model for light in a time of great cultural and sociological darkness. In blending discussion of the facts by scholars--each presenting a particular slant on Catherine's life and conduct--with fictional recreations of pivotal events in her life, this film presents a well-rounded portrait of 18th Century Europe's most 'enlightened' despot

Soul kitchen by Fatih Akin( Visual )

3 editions published between 2009 and 2010 in German and held by 485 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Soul Kitchen" is Zinos Kazantsakis's humdrum restaurant in a working-class neighborhood of Hamburg. The food is mostly frozen, unceremoniously zapped in the microwave, or thrown into a vat of bubbling grease. He loves his restaurant and his girlfriend Nadine, even after she leaves him for an assignment in China. Wanting to liven up the restaurant, Zinos hires an out-of-work three-star chef, lets his ex-con brother Ilias spin records, and seeks out new clientele. Soon Soul Kitchen is reborn as Hamburg's newest hot spot. On a whim, Zinos flies to China to rekindle his relationship with Nadine leaving his brother in charge. There is also a slipped disc, a hard-drinking, chain-smoking waitress, a scheming real-estate developer, a Turkish "physio-healer," and a high stakes poker game in the mix. But the film is not about food or love; it's about family, life and human relationships, with a lingering nostalgia for a time when eating out implied getting dead drunk, stuffing one's face with cholesterol and kissing across the table

Spies of Mississippi( Visual )

1 edition published in 2014 in English and held by 396 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In the spring of 1964, the civil rights community is gearing up for "Mississippi Freedom Summer," during which hundreds, if not thousands, of mostly white student activists from the North will link up with mostly black freedom workers to accomplish what the Mississippi power structure fears the most: registering black people to vote. For the segregationists, Freedom Summer is nothing less than a declaration of war. The state responds by swearing in hundreds of new deputies, stockpiling tear gas and riot gear, and preparing the jails for an influx of summer "guests." But the most powerful men in the state have another weapon to fight integration. They have quietly created a secret, state-funded spy agency, the Mississippi State Sovereignty Commission, answering directly to the Governor. During the height of the civil rights movement, sovereignty commission operatives employed a cadre of black operatives who infiltrated the movement, rooting out its future plans, identifying its leaders, and tripping up its foot soldiers. By gaining the trust of civil rights crusaders, they gathered crucial intelligence on behalf of the segregationist state."--Container

Graham Dorrington is an enthusiastic English aeronautical engineer on a mission to revive the airship, that ill-fated aeronautic conveyance otherwise known as the dirigible or zeppelin, to fly over the Amazon canopy. His eagerness is diminished by the memory an incident 10 years earlier, in which photographer Dieter Plage was killed. This film records an expedition to Guyana, where Dorrington and his small crew of researchers, technicians, and porters struggle with the elements, the laws of physics, and one another as they try to get a new vessel off the ground. Mr. Herzog, who has made a specialty of finding obsessives and eccentrics who push themselves to extremes, asks questions, films, and narrates the result
