Bis heute ist das Bewusstsein über den Völkermord an den Sinti und Roma während des Zweiten Weltkriegs in der Bevölkerung kaum vorhanden und es hat lange gedauert, bis das Thema von der öffentlichen Diskussion aufgegriffen wurde. Vor zwanzig Jahren beschloss der Deutsche Bundestag ein Denkmal in Berlin zu errichten, um an den "vergessenen" Holocaust zu erinnern und der verfolgten Minderheit einen Ort des Erinnerns zu geben. Vom Beschluss für das Denkmal bis zu seiner Fertigstellung ist viel Zeit vergangen. Das Buch stellt das Konzept des Denkmals und seine Entstehungsgeschichte kritisch dar und gibt einen Einblick in die Geschichte des Volkes der Sinti und Roma, die immer auch eine Geschichte der Verfolgung war
