Einer der bedeutendsten Momente in Kurt Masurs Laufbahn war die Einweihung des Neuen Gewandhauses, dessen Neubau wesentlich auf dem unermüdlichen Engagement des Dirigenten in dieser Sache gründet. Es wurde am 8. Oktober 1981 mit einem Konzert eröffnet dessen Live-Mitschnitt nun erstmals komplett auf CD vorliegt. Neben Beethovens 9. Sinfonie erklang ein Werk, das Masur eigens für diesen Anlaß bei Friedrich Thiele in Auftrag gab: "Gesänge an die Sonne. Obwohl die Texte von Goethe, Schiller und Hölderlin! den Kulturfunktionären der DDR nicht zusagten, konnte der Maestro sich gegen alle Widerstände durchsetzen und brachte das Werk an diesem besonderen Tag zur Uraufführung. Ergänzt werden beide Werke durch eine Aufnahme, die Masurs eben geschilderten Einsatz für Neue Musik erneut dokumentiert. Generell bilden moderne Werke in seinem Repertoire nämlich keine Ausnahmen. Im CD-Booklet bilanziert Autor Dirk Stöve über die damalige Eröffnungssaison: "Allein in der Zeit bis Jahresende dirigierte Kurt Masur neun Uraufführungen, darunter solche von Giya Kantscheli und Alfred Schnittke, der in der Sowjetunion mit Restriktionen zu kämpfen hatte
