A thousand miles up the Nile by Amelia B Edwards( Book )

148 editions published between 1800 and 2017 in 5 languages and held by 1,197 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Victorian traveler Amelia Edwards was already a successful writer when she traveled a thousand miles up the Nile with an Egyptian crew and a few friends. The trip changed her life. A best seller of Victorian travel when published in 1877, A Thousand Miles Up the Nile has enthralled readers for more than a century and a quarter. With the original illustrations and footnotes, this is an enhanced version with a new introduction and additional, modern footnotes. Edwards' prodigious knowledge and research of ancient Egypt, Egyptian gods, pharaohs, and classical history places her travels in context for you. But it is her sensitive, romantic descriptions of Egyptian people and places that makes the book a delight to read over and over
Pharaohs, fellahs and explorers by Amelia B Edwards( Book )

33 editions published between 1891 and 2013 in English and held by 435 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

'If modern Egypt is so far away that it takes three weeks to get there, ancient Egypt is infinitely more distant.' So wrote novelist, journalist, traveller and Egyptologist Amelia Edwards (1831-92) in this, the last published work of her career. Having first travelled to Egypt in 1873, in 1889-90 Edwards was invited to lecture in the United States, campaigning for the Egypt Exploration Fund, of which she was joint honorary secretary. In five months she addressed 100,000 people at over 110 meetings in sixteen states. First published in 1892, a month before her death, this book is a collection of her lectures, containing substantial illustrations, additions, notes, and references. Exhibiting both Edwards' ability to make abstruse subjects come alive without losing factual correctness, and the humour and enthusiasm with which she recounted her experiences, this book marks the culmination of twenty years' research and exploration

Manual of Egyptian archæology and guide to the study of antiquities in Egypt. For the use of students and travellers by G Maspero( Book )

37 editions published between 1887 and 2012 in English and held by 373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Amelia Edwards' English translation of the Manual of Egyptian Archaeology by the renowned French Egyptologist Gaston Camille Charles Maspero (1846-1916) was originally published in 1887. The fifth edition reissued here appeared in 1902, ten years after Edwards' death, under the auspices of Maspero. Edwards' translation was important for generating public interest in Egyptology in Britain. It is a classic work of popular Egyptology that has served for years as an indispensable guide for students, amateur enthusiasts and professionals, and was long relied upon by British tourists visiting Egypt's ancient sites. The book contains chapters on civil and military architecture, religious architecture, ancient tombs, Egyptian painting and sculpture, and industrial art. There are detailed sections on the various materials used including stone, clay, glass, wood, ivory, leather, textile fabrics, iron, lead, and bronze. The volume is beautifully illustrated with over 300 engravings

"This book was an immediate contemporary success and established Amelia Edwards's reputation as a novelist. The story of a young woman's growth from chidlhood to maturity is traced through her relationship with Hugh Farquhar whom she idolises from the first moment when, still a child, she meets him, already a mature man of the world. The development of their love for each other makes challenging and even painful demands upon them both before it reaches final fruition. This story of a spirited and talented heroine is set against the background of life in France and Germany and Italy and is rich in narrative and character."--Back cover

" ... Hamel, unorthodox minister of a small French Protestant community [is] not only sophisticated and highly cultivated but he is also possessed of a powerful sexual magnetism ... When he falls in love with the young and innocent Marguerite, he is brought into striking contrast with the accepted suitor, Charles, a man of inflexible rectitude but, initially at least, little appeal. The progress of their rivalry for Marguerite's favour draws on the resources, intellectual and emotional, of both of them, till it issues in the final dramatic climax."--Back cover
