The Messiah by George Frideric Handel( )

73 editions published between 1934 and 2013 in 5 languages and held by 1,071 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The German conductor Hermann Scherchen (1891-1966) recorded Handel's Messiah twice: his first recording, which is presented (by the way, it was the first uncut release of the work), was made with an English case in September 1953, a second version in stereo was recorded in Vienna during April 1959 with an international cast including Pierrette Alarie, Nan Merriman, Leopold Simoneau and again Richard Standen. The earlier recording is generally regarded as the finer one. Scherchen's unpretentious and transparent sound together with an often unusual choice of tempos was a sensation at the time the recording was released and still convincing today

Few composers have achieved such success with a single work as Holst with The Planets. Each movement expresses the planet's supposed astrological character, and the colorful orchestration and memorable melodies ensured its immediate and ongoing popularity. It's hard to believe now that it was a groundbreaking work, a huge multi-movement piece that finally fades into ethereal silence as wordless voices disappear into outer space
