Configurational forces as basic concepts of continuum physics by
Morton E Gurtin(
)
23 editions published between 1899 and 2005 in English and held by 706 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This monograph presents a rational treatment of the notion of configurational forces; it is an effort to promote a new viewpoint. Included is a presentation of configurational forces within a classical context and a discussion of their use in areas as diverse as phase transitions and fracture." "The work should be of interest to materials scientists, mechanicians, and mathematicians."Jacket

An introduction to continuum mechanics by
Morton E Gurtin(
Book
)
32 editions published between 1981 and 2009 in English and held by 667 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book presents an introduction to the classical theories of continuum mechanics; in particular, to the theories of ideal, compressible, and viscous fluids, and to the linear and nonlinear theories of elasticity. These theories are important, not only because they are applicable to a majority of the problems in continuum mechanics arising in practice, but because they form a solid base upon which one can readily construct more complex theories of material behavior. Further, although attention is limited to the classical theories, the treatment is modern with a major emphasis on foundations and structure

The mechanics and thermodynamics of continua by
Morton E Gurtin(
)
24 editions published between 2009 and 2014 in English and held by 596 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Mechanics and Thermodynamics of Continua presents a unified treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics that emphasises the universal status of the basic balances and the entropy imbalance. These laws are viewed as fundamental building blocks on which to frame theories of material behaviour. As a valuable reference source, this book presents a detailed and complete treatment of continuum mechanics and thermodynamics for graduates and advanced undergraduates in engineering, physics, and mathematics. Topics in finite elasticity by
Morton E Gurtin(
Book
)
18 editions published between 1981 and 1993 in English and Undetermined and held by 370 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Finite elasticity is a theory of elastic materials that are capable of undergoing large deformations. This theory is inherently nonlinear and is mathematically quite complex. This monograph presents a derivation of the basic equations of the theory, a discussion of the general boundaryvalue problems, and a treatment of several interesting and important special topics such as simple shear, uniqueness, the tensile deformations of a cube, and antiplane shear. The monograph is intended for engineers, physicists, and mathematicians

On the evolution of phase boundaries by
Morton E Gurtin(
Book
)
11 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 235 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This volume emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of contemporary research in the field of phase transitions, research which involves ideas from nonlinear partial differential equations, asymptotic analysis, numerical computation and experiment. Topics covered include the treatment of scaling laws that describe the coarsening or ripening behavior observed during the later stages of phase transitions; novel numerical methods for treating interface dynamics; the mathematical description of geometric models of interface dynamics; determination of the governing equations and interfacial boundary conditions in the context of fluid flow and elasticity. This volume should be valuable for any researcher pursuing modern developments in the theory and applications of phase transitions and interface dynamics

Fundamental contributions to the continuum theory of evolving phase interfaces in solids : a collection of reprints of 14
seminal papers, dedicated to Morton E. Gurtin on the occasion of his sixtyfifth birthday by
J. M Ball(
Book
)
8 editions published in 1999 in English and held by 111 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book addresses the physics of phase transitions in chemical compositions and crystal or molecular structures. It deals with the control of the scale and distribution of microstructural features that are associated with different phases. Here a mathematical framework is presented with the capacity to describe and predict the evolution of phase interfaces. Some of the relevant developments are summarized, with emphasis being placed on the contributions made by those researchers whose works are printed in this volume

Wave propagation in the linear theory of viscoelasticity by
George M. C Fisher(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
It was shown in AD436 823 that, in the linear theory of viscoelasticity, the speed of propagation of an acceleration wave is a solution of a particular eigenvalue problem. It is demonstrated that this eigenvalue problem governs, not only the speed of propagation of acceleration waves, but also the propagation speeds of shocks and all higher order waves. Solutions which contain discontinuities of arbitrary order N are easily exhibited
