Plane algebraic curves by Egbert Brieskorn( )

42 editions published between 1981 and 2015 in 3 languages and held by 958 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a detailed and comprehensive introduction to the theory of plane algebraic curves, the authors examine this classical area of mathematics that both figured prominently in ancient Greek studies and remains a source of inspiration and topic of research to this day. Arising from notes for a course given at the University of Bonn in Germany, lane Algebraic Curves reflects the author's concern for the student audience through emphasis upon motivation, development of imagination, and understanding of basic ideas. As classical objects, curves may be viewed from many angles; this text provides a foundation for the comprehension and exploration of modern work on singularities. -- In the first chapter one finds many special curves with very attractive geometric presentations the wealth of illustrations is a distinctive characteristic of this book ; and an introduction to projective geometry (over the complex numbers). In the second chapter one finds a very simple proof of Bezout's theorem and a detailed discussion of cubics. The heart of this book and how else could it be with the first author is the chapter on the resolution of singularities (always over the complex numbers). (...) Especially remarkable is the outlook to further work on the topics discussed, with numerous references to the literature. Many examples round off this successful representation of a classical and yet still very much alive subject. (Mathematical Reviews)
The geometry of algebraic Fermi curves by D Gieseker( Book )

15 editions published between 1992 and 1993 in English and held by 310 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Geometry of Algebraic Fermi Curves deals with the geometry of algebraic Fermi curves, with emphasis on the inverse spectral problem. Topics covered include the periodic Schrödinger operator and electrons in a crystal; one-dimensional algebraic Bloch varieties; separable Bloch varieties; and monodromy for separable and generic Bloch varieties. Compactification, the potential zero, and density of states are also discussed. This book consists of 13 chapters and begins by recalling the static lattice approximation for electronic motion at low temperature in a pure, finite sample of a d-dim
Riemann surfaces of infinite genus by Joel S Feldman( Book )

12 editions published in 2003 in English and held by 224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book, Riemann surfaces of infinite genus are constructed geometrically by pasting together plane domains and handles. To achieve a meaningful generalization of the classical theory of Riemann surfaces to the case of infinite genus, one must impose restrictions on the asymptotic behavior of the Riemann surface. In the construction carried out here, these restrictions are formulated in terms of the sizes and locations of the handles and in terms of the gluing maps. The approach used in this book has two main attractions. The first is that much of the classical theory of Riemann surfaces

Fermionic functional integrals and the renormalization group by Joel S Feldman( Book )

9 editions published in 2002 in English and held by 196 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, written by well-known experts in the field, offers a concise summary of one of the latest and most significant developments in the theoretical analysis of quantum field theory. The renormalization group is the name given to a technique for analyzing the qualitative behavior of a class of physical systems by iterating a map on the vector space of interactions for the class. In a typical nonrigorous application of this technique, one assumes, based on one's physical intuition, that only a certain finite dimensional subspace (usually of dimension three or less) is important. The materi
Geometrie ein Lehrbuch für Mathematik- und Physikstudierende by Horst Knörrer( )

6 editions published between 2006 and 2012 in German and held by 162 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Arithmetik und Geometrie : vier Vorlesungen by Horst Knörrer( Book )

10 editions published in 1986 in German and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Quantum theory from small to large scales : École de physique des Houches, session XCV, 2--27 August 2010 by École d'été de physique théorique( Book )

1 edition published in 2012 in English and held by 4 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book collects lecture courses and seminars given at the Les Houches Summer School 2010 on "Quantum Theory: From Small to Large Scales". Fundamental quantum phenomena appear on all scales, from microscopic to macroscopic. Some of the pertinent questions include the onset of decoherence, the dynamics of collective modes, the influence of external randomness and the emergence of dissipative behaviour. Our understanding of such phenomena has been advanced by the study of modelsystems and by the derivation and analysis of effective dynamics for large systems and over long times. In this field, research in mathematical physics has regularly contributed results that were recognized as essential in the physics community. During the last few years, the key questions have beensharpened and progress on answering them has been particularly strong. This book reviews the state-of-the-art developments in this field and provides the necessary background for future studies
