The shape of inner space : string theory and the geometry of the universe's hidden dimensions by
ShingTung Yau(
)
17 editions published between 2010 and 2012 in English and Polish and held by 2,014 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
String theory says we live in a tendimensional universe, but that only four are accessible to our everyday senses. According to theorists, the missing six are curled up in bizarre structures known as CalabiYau manifolds. Here, ShingTung Yau, the man who mathematically proved that these manifolds exist, argues that not only is geometry fundamental to string theory, it is also fundamental to the very nature of our universe. Time and again, where Yau has gone, physics has followed. Now for the first time, readers will follow Yau's penetrating thinking on where we've been, and where mathematics will take us next. A fascinating exploration of a world we are only just beginning to grasp, The Shape of Inner Space will change the way we consider the universe on both its grandest and smallest scales

A history in sum : 150 years of mathematics at Harvard (18251975) by
Steven J Nadis(
)
12 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 1,203 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Main description: In the twentieth century, mathematicians at Harvard University trailblazed a distinctly American tradition in algebraic geometry and topology, complex analysis, number theory, and other esoteric fields. Written in accessible prose, A History in Sum takes a close look at the contributions to higher mathematics of these extraordinary minds

Seminar on Differential Geometry. <1979 1980>(
Book
)
19 editions published between 1982 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 630 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This collection of papers constitutes a wideranging survey of recent developments in differential geometry and its interactions with other fields, especially partial differential equations and mathematical physics. This area of mathematics was the subject of a special program at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton during the academic year 19791980; the papers in this volume were contributed by the speakers in the sequence of seminars organized by ShingTung Yau for this program. Both survey articles and articles presenting new results are included. The articles on differential geometry and partial differential equations include a general survey article by the editor on the relationship of the two fields and more specialized articles on topics including harmonic mappings, isoperimetric and Poincaré inequalities, metrics with specified curvature properties, the MongeArnpere equation, L2 harmonic forms and cohomology, manifolds of positive curvature, isometric embedding, and Kraumlhler manifolds and metrics. The articles on differential geometry and mathematical physics cover such topics as renormalization, instantons, gauge fields and the YangMills equation, nonlinear evolution equations, incompleteness of spacetimes, black holes, and quantum gravity. A feature of special interest is the inclusion of a list of more than one hundred unsolved research problems compiled by the editor with comments and bibliographical information

Mirror symmetry has undergone dramatic progress during the last five years. Tremendous insight has been gained on a number of key issues. This volume surveys these results. Some of the contributions in this work have appeared elsewhere, while others were written specifically for this collection. The areas covered are organized into 4 sections, and each presents papers by both physicists and mathematicians. This volume collects the most important developments that have taken place in mathematical physics since 1991. It is an essential reference tool for both mathematics and physics libraries an

The founders of index theory : reminiscences of and about Sir Michael Atiyah, Raoul Bott, Friedrich Hirzebruch, and I.M. Singer(
Book
)
17 editions published between 2003 and 2009 in English and Swedish and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Index Theory is one of the most exciting and consequential accomplishments of twentiethcentury mathematics. The Founders of Index Theory contemplates the four great mathematicians who developed index theory Sir Michael Atiyah, Raoul Bott, Friedrich Hirzebruch, and I.M. Singer through the eyes of their students, collaborators and colleagues, their friends and family members, and themselves." "In addition to their own essays and correspondence of historical importance this volume presents a variety of material of a decidedly personal as well as compelling mathematical nature, written by some of their most notable students and longtime collaborators, including such leading current figures in mathematics and physics as Simon Donaldson, Edward Witten, and S.T. Yau. In these writings, one perceives the expansive influence of their work across various fields of mathematics and into theoretical physics." "At a time when the long and illustrious careers of Atiyah, Hirzebruch, and Singer are being recognized with birthday celebrations at Edinburgh, in Europe, and in Massachusetts, this second edition of Founders of Index Theory remembers the late and much beloved Raoul Bott in the affectionate words of those three men, as well as family members and longtime friends and colleagues. What emerges is the portrait of a compelling mathematical mind informed by a warm and magnetic personality that was both a joy and inspiration to those who knew him." "This volume includes a generous collection of color and blackandwhite photographs many rarely seen of the four principal figures together with their family, friends, and colleagues. These include numerous images of Bott dating from his early childhood to his last years at Harvard University." "The Founders of Index Theory, Second Edition is a valuable portrayal of four men who transformed mathematics in a profound manner, and who belong to a class of researchers whose interest and influence transcend the conventional boundaries of mathematical fields."Jacket

12 editions published in 2001 in English and Undetermined and held by 154 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The collection of articles in this volume are based on l ectures presented during the Winter School on Mirror Symmetry held at Harvard University. There are many new directions suggested by mirror symmetry which could potentially have very rich connections in physics and mathematics. This book brings together the latest research in a major area of mathematical physics, including the recent progress in mirror manifolds and Lagrangian submanifolds. In particular, several articles describing homological approach and related topics are included. Other AMS titles edited by S.T Yau published in the

This book presents surveys from a workshop held during the theme year in geometry and topology at the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM, University of Montréal). The volume is in some sense a sequel to Mirror Symmetry I (1998) and Mirror Symmetry II (1996), copublished by the AMS and International Press. Included are recent developments in the theory of mirror manifolds and the related areas of complex and symplectic geometry. The long introductory articles explain the key physical ideas and motivation, namely conformal field theory, supersymmetry, and string theory. Open problems are
