La ronde by Max Ophuls( Visual )

17 editions published between 1950 and 2012 in French and held by 493 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

La Ronde translates as 'the round' which can refer to the policeman's beat, a circle of dancers, or a carousel, all of which this circular collection of interconnected short stories resembles. Each scene is built around a specific pair, and when one member of the pair breaks away from his or her lover, he or she then moves on to the next, introducing the partner that will lead on to the next pair, and so on until we are back where we started. Many of these lovers are seeking something they've lost in arms that look familiar but that belong to strangers. La ronde is the bittersweet note sounded by the circular nostalgia of the heart

Charming rogue Fanfan flits from one adventure to the other after evading marriage by joining the army in the midst of the Seven Years' War. He's motivated less by patriotism than by a consultation with Adeline, a voluptuous phony fortuneteller who promises that he will find glory in the army, even win the hand of King Louis XV's daughter. Herself the daughter of a recruiting sergeant, Adeline is a charlatan, but the irrepressible Fanfan sets about fulfilling his "destiny," even as his would-be soothsayer finds herself falling in love with him. Flirting and fighting, trouble reliably finds Fanfan, who just as reliably evades it

Les liaisons dangereuses by Roger Vadim( Visual )

33 editions published between 1959 and 2014 in French and Undetermined and held by 180 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on the 18th century novel that scandalized Parisian society, Vadim's adaptation modernizes the setting, but remains faithful to the novel's wicked sensibility. In this version, Valmont (Philipe) and Juliette (Moreau) have an unusually "open" marriage in which adulterous affairs are encouraged--as long as love is not involved. A Swiss ski resort provides the perfect backdrop for their perverse game of devastating the emotional lives of those around them. Their game backfires, however, when Valmont sets out to compromise the virtuous Marianne (Annette Vadim), and breaks their cardinal rule by falling in love. Film creates a portrait of a decadent society where people become mere playing pieces in the game of seduction
