Publisher's description: A much anticipated, wide-ranging survey of works by one of the world's greatest artists. El Greco (1541-1614), born Domenikos Theotokopoulos, was one of the most fascinating and distinctive artists of the sixteenth century. His works are immediately recognizable for their brilliant colors, elongated figures, and spiritual intensity. Initially trained in Crete, in around 1567 El Greco moved to Italy where he purportedly studied with Titian. A decade later he is documented in Toledo (south of Madrid), and he spent the rest of his long life in Spain. His paintings and writings offer a thoughtful, frequently inspired response to the varied environments in which he worked--and they reveal that he was deeply engaged with the religious and artistic thinking of his times. This lavishly illustrated book--the first comprehensive English-language publication on El Greco in many years--addresses the full range of the artist's work in painting and sculpture, from his Byzantine icons to his late altarpieces. It considers his personality from both a religious and intellectual point of view, and presents the artist's religious, mythological, genre, landscape, and portrait works, providing the historical context in which they were made. El Greco is the catalogue for an exhibition organized jointly by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, and the National Gallery, London. The exhibition opens in New York in October 2003, and moves to London in February 2004

El Greco : the burial of the Count of Orgaz by F Calvo Serraller( Book )

4 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 318 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is a key work in the Mannerist tradition and a supreme achievement of the human spirit. Like The Divine Comedy and the Eroica Symphony, it epitomizes an age, and any study of it has to probe deeply not only into the history of art but also into religion, society and psychology."--BOOK JACKET. "It is appropriate therefore that a whole book should be devoted to this single painting - a painting whose subject is both particularized and universal."--BOOK JACKET. "The painting is reproduced in all its glory in this magnificent book, bringing the reader face to face with its splendor, its rich colors and its incredible expressiveness. Shown in a series of specially commissioned photographs, it is illustrated first as a whole, and then in a series of enlarged details that magnify every minute embellishment and brushstroke."--Jacket

El Greco and Modernism( Book )

3 editions published in 2012 in English and held by 231 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The sensational oeuvre of El Greco (1541-1614) was first introduced to a broader German audience in 1910 through Julius Meier-Graefe's journal, "The Spanish Journey". Numerous artists subsequently caught "Greco fever" when they first saw larger groups of his works in exhibitions in Munich in 1911 and Düsseldorf in 1912. Max Beckmann, Oskar Kokoschka, Max Oppenheimer, Ludwig Meidner, and especially members of the Blaue Reiter-August Macke, Franz Marc, Albert Bloch, and others-recognized in El Greco a father figure for the Modernist movement, mentioning him in the same breath as Paul Cézanne. This volume presents a general selection of over forty paintings by El Greco from the most famous museums around the world. At the same time, the young artists' exploration of the paintings and visual spheres of the exceptional Spanish painter are discussed, opening up a fascinating view of the battle for Modernism. Exhibition: Museum Kunstpalast, Düsseldorf, Germany (28.4.-12.8.2012)
El Greco : Domenikos Theotokopoulos, 1541-1614 by Michael Scholz-Hänsel( Book )

Cretan-born painter Domenicos Theotocopoulos, better known by his Spanish nickname, El Greco (c.1545-1614), studied under Titian in Venice before settling down in Toldeo. Commissioned by the church and local nobility, El Greco produced dramatic paintings marked by distorted figures and vibrant color contrasted with subtle grays. Though his work was appreciated by his contemporaries, especially intellectuals, it wasn't until the 20th century that it was widely embraced and admired, influencing in particular the Expressionist movement

"This title is an informed study of El Greco's paintings of the landscape and monuments of the city of Toledo. Born in Crete, he trained as a painter of icons, moved to Venice and then abandoned Italy for Spain in 1577. His experiences in Italy, especially his contact with the paintings of the Renaissance and particularly the work of Titian, inspired his singular and innovative paintings, reactions to which have changed markedly over the centuries. This book relates how his profoundly original art challenged religious pictorial tradition in Spain, and how his attitudes to Spain and Spanish art led to the development of myths surrounding his work." "El Greco saw himself as the epitome of the artist as courtier and philosopher - very different from those local craftsmen who had created the art of medieval Toledo. Many of his masterpieces still grace the city - particularly El Espolio in the cathedral and the magnificent Burial of the Count of Orgaz in the parish church of Santo Tome. Special attention is given in this book to the highly unusual representations he painted of Toledo, especially the View of Toledo, with its precise delineations of important buildings and the surrounding landscape." "Revealed here is the artist El Greco, the visionary, the isolated individualist, proud, provocative and reflective, who was often in dispute over his fees with his Church patrons, and the first inventor in Spain of the modern work of art and of the idea of the modern artist."--Jacket

Every stage of El Greco's career is represented here, from his Byzantine icons to the late altarpieces in which the artist's individual treatment of mystical imagery reached its climax.
