Markov processes and related problems of analysis by
E. B Dynkin(
)
65 editions published between 1963 and 2008 in 4 languages and held by 1,880 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The theory of Markov Processes has become a powerful tool in partial differential equations and potential theory with important applications to physics. Professor Dynkin has made many profound contributions to the subject and in this volume are collected several of his most important expository and survey articles. The content of these articles has not been covered in any monograph as yet. This account is accessible to graduate students in mathematics and operations research and will be welcomed by all those interested in stochastic processes and their applications

Interactions between the theory of partial differential equations of elliptic and parabolic types and the theory of stochastic processes are beneficial for both probability theory and analysis. At the beginning, mostly analytic results were used by probabilists. More recently, analysts (and physicists) took inspiration from the probabilistic approach. Of course, the development of analysis in general and of the theory of partial differential equations in particular, was motivated to a great extent by problems in physics. A difference between physics and probability is that the latter provides

Onishchik, A.A. Kirillov, and E.B. Vinberg, who obtained their first results on Lie groups in Dynkin's seminar. At a later stage, the work of the seminar was greatly enriched by the active participation of 1. 1. Pyatetskii Shapiro. As already noted, Dynkin started to work in probability as far back as his undergraduate studies. In fact, his first published paper deals with a problem arising in Markov chain theory. The most significant among his earliest probabilistic results concern sufficient statistics. In [15] and [17], Dynkin described all families of onedimensional probability distributions admitting nontrivial sufficient statistics. These papers have considerably influenced the subsequent research in this field. But Dynkin's most famous results in probability concern the theory of Markov processes. Following Kolmogorov, Feller, Doob and Ito, Dynkin opened a new chapter in the theory of Markov processes. He created the fundamental concept of a Markov process as a family of measures corresponding to var ious initial times and states and he defined time homogeneous processes in terms of the shift operators ()t. In a joint paper with his student A

Superdiffusions and positive solutions of nonlinear partial differential equations by
E. B Dynkin(
Book
)
2 editions published in 2004 in English and held by 225 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"This book is devoted to the applications of probability theory to the theory of nonlinear partial differential equations. More precisely, it is shown that all positive solutions for a class of nonlinear elliptic equations in a domain are described in terms of their traces on the boundary of the domain. The main probabilistic tool is the theory of superdiffusions, which describes a random evolution of a cloud of particles. A substantial enhancement of this theory is presented that can be of interest for everybody who works on applications of probabilistic methods to mathematical analysis."Jacket

Mathematical conversations : Multicolor problems, Problems in the theory of numbers, and Random walks by
E. B Dynkin(
)
8 editions published between 2006 and 2013 in English and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Combining three books into a single volume, this text comprises Multicolor Problems, dealing with several of the classical mapcoloring problems; Problems in the Theory of Numbers, an elementary introduction to algebraic number theory; and Random Walks, addressing basic problems in probability theory.The book's primary aim is not so much to impart new information as to teach an active, creative attitude toward mathematics. The sole prerequisites are highschool algebra and (for Multicolor Problems) a familiarity with the methods of mathematical induction. The book is designed for the reader's active participation. The problems are carefully integrated into the text and should be solved in order. Although they are basic, they are by no means elementary. Some sequences of problems are geared toward the mastery of a new method, rather than a definitive result, and others are practice exercises, designed to introduce new concepts. Complete solutions appear at the end
