This resource guide for disabled educators is organized chronologically according to typical stages of career preparation and employment. Part One is a discussion of the process of deciding on an education career, completing a teacher training program, and obtaining certification. It highlights specific barriers that disabled persons have faced in the process and suggests possible solutions. Part Two describes, by category of physical disability, the successful coping strategies used by disabled educators in the classroom. The categories are: blind and visually impaired; deaf and hard of hearing; amputees; those with neurological disabilities (spinal cord and cerebral), neuromuscular disabilities, organic disorders, and orthopedic handicaps; speech impaired; and the mentally retarded. In Part Three, discussions are presented from a conference of disabled and non-disabled educators on barriers faced by disabled persons in education, and ways are suggested to eliminate or reduce them. Part Four is a directory of more than 900 educators with disabilities who agreed to be listed as resource persons. Part Five includes print, nonprint, and organizational resources relating to handicapped persons in education. (JD)
