The handbook of linguistics by Mark Aronoff( )

71 editions published between 2000 and 2017 in 3 languages and held by 2,013 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Presupposing no prior knowledge of linguistics, the Handbook of Linguistics is the resource for people who want to learn about the subject and its subdisciplines." "Written by globally recognized leading figures, this Handbook provides a comprehensive and accessible account of the field of linguistics. It begins with a general overview that considers the origins of language, frames the discipline within its historical context, and looks at how linguists acquire new data. It then turns to the traditional subdisciplines of linguistics." "This authoritative volume provides a broad yet detailed picture of what is known about language today."--Jacket

Word formation in generative grammar by Mark Aronoff( Book )

49 editions published between 1975 and 1985 in English and Undetermined and held by 675 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In spite of the wide-spread recognition that morphology has a place in generative grammar, Aronoff's book is one of the few proposals of a theory of morphology within that framework, and is certainly the most extensive. Much of the book centers around traditional observations concerning morphology, particularly those of the American structuralists, and how they are to be handled and/or explained within a generative account. In fact, in some respects Aronoff's model appears to re-adopt earlier, pre-generative views; e.g., his proposed class of allomorphy rules (see below) is reminiscent of what were called morphophonemic rules in an earlier tradition. However, in important respects that will be pointed out below, Aronoff's claims represent a departure from traditional assumptions as well as from earlier generative accounts. -- from http://www.jstor.org (Feb. 7, 2014)

What is morphology? by Mark Aronoff( Book )

37 editions published between 2004 and 2012 in English and held by 531 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Assuming only the most basic background in linguistics, What is Morphology? provides a concise, critical introduction to the central ideas and perennial problems of morphology. Designed to familiarize beginning students and specialists alike with the importance of morphology as a subject to research, this volume moves organically from the morphological "facts of everyday life" to important relationships with phonology, syntax, and semantics." "What is Morphology? equips readers with the skills to analyze a wealth of classic morphological issues through narration and by direct example. This includes detailed discussion of the complex morphology of one West African language, Kujamaat Joola, and many useful exercises at the ends of the chapters."--BOOK JACKET

Morphology now by Morphology now( Book )

11 editions published in 1992 in English and Undetermined and held by 226 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Several distinct general linguistic theories are represented here: autolexical theory, categorial grammar, functional grammar, and government and binding syntax. Each essay in this book is centered around a point of morphological theory and each one is designed to further the development of that theory and hence linguistic theory in general. Many different languages are analyzed: Sino-Tibetan Manipuri, Eskimo Central Siberian Upik, Athabaskan Ahtna, Latin, modern European languages, and English. All of these sometimes dramatically different language systems are treated as manifestations of a single unified human language faculty, and these studies of generative morphology are incorporated into linguistic theory and the explanation of diversity in human language
