Making Muslim space in North America and Europe( )

14 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 2,149 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Focusing on the private and public use of space, this volume explores the religious life of the new Muslim communities in North America and Europe. Unlike most studies of immigrant groups, these essays concentrate on cultural practices and expressions of everyday life rather than on the political issues that dominate today's headlines. The authors emphasize the cultural strength and creativity of communities that draw upon Islamic symbols and practices to define "Muslim space" against the background of a non-Muslim environment. -- The range of perspectives is broad, encompassing middle-class professionals, mosque congregations, factory workers in France and the north of England, itinerant African traders, and prison inmates in New York. The truism that "Islam is a religion of the word" takes on concrete meaning as these disparate communities find ways to elaborate word-centered ritual and to have the visual and aural presence of sacred words in the spaces they inhabit. -- Publisher description
A concise history of modern India by Barbara Daly Metcalf( )

40 editions published between 2006 and 2014 in English and held by 1,979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This is a concise history of India since the time of the Mughals. It comprises the history of what was known as British India from the late eighteenth century until 1947, when the subcontinent was split into the two independent countries of India and Pakistan, and of the Republic of India thereafter. (The history of Pakistan, and after 1971, of Bangladesh, is taken up in a separate volume in this series.) In this work we hope to capture something of the excitement that has characterized the field of India studies in recent decades. Any history written today differs markedly from that of the late 1950s and early 1960s when we, as graduate students, first 'discovered' India. The history of India, like histories everywhere, is now at its best written as a more inclusive story, and one with fewer determining narratives. Not only do historians seek to include more of the population in their histories - women, minorities, the dispossessed - but they are also interested in alternative historical narratives, those shaped by distinctive cosmologies or by local experiences. Historians question, above all, the historical narratives that were forged - as they were everywhere in the modern world - by the compelling visions of nationalism"--CProvided by publisher

A concise history of India by Barbara Daly Metcalf( Book )

16 editions published between 2001 and 2006 in English and held by 924 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

While early histories were often composed as handmaids of British imperialism or as products of emerging nationalist identities, this book challenges the notion that a continuous meaning can be applied to social categories such as 'caste', 'Hindu', 'Muslim', or even 'India'. The narrative focuses on the fundamentally political theme of the imaginative and instituional structures that successively changed and sustained both colonial and independent India. It also documents the social changes and the rich cultural life that were constituted in interaction with that political structure and vision. Earlier chapters focus on the period of Muslim dynasties that preceded colonial conquest, and the book concludes with the dramatic recent events of the 1990s, including economic change, religious nationalism and India's emergence as a nuclear power. Illustrations and quotations from historical sources are integral to the narrative
Islamic revival in British India : Deoband, 1860-1900 by Barbara Daly Metcalf( Book )

31 editions published between 1982 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 731 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In a study of the vitality of Islam in late nineteenth-century north India, Barbara Metcalf explains the response of Islamic religious scholars (ulama) to the colonial dominance of the British and the collapse of Muslim political power. Focussing on Deoband, the most important Islamic seminary of the period, she discusses the ways in which the ulama enhanced a sense of cultural continuity in a period of alien rule. Deprived of a Muslim state, the leaders of Deoband sought to renew Islamic spiritual life by teaching early Islamic principles. To this end, they concerned themselves with popular behaviour and the education of both elite and non-elite Muslims through the spoken language, Urdu

Husain Ahmad Madani : the jihad for Islam and India's freedom by Barbara Daly Metcalf( Book )

8 editions published between 2009 and 2012 in English and held by 213 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Maulana Husain Ahmad Madani (1879-1957) was a political activist, Islamic scholar, and supporter of Gandhi during the struggle for India's independence. Immersed in Islamic scholarship from an early age, he sought to apply Muslim teachings to the urgent issues of his day. Humane and fiercely dedicated, whether campaigning against the separation of Pakistan, or in favour of democracy and inter-religious peace, he fought relentlessly for what he believed in." "Barbara Metcalf's biography is informed by Madani's letters and autobiographies, spanning a lifetime of campaigning and controversy. Interspersing personal insights with detailed knowledge of the prevailing political climate, Metcalf creates an intimate and revealing account of one of the most important men in the history of modern Islam."--Jacket
