An objective method for determining the generalized transport tensor for two-dimensional Eulerian models by Edwin Frederick Danielsen( Book )

4 editions published in 1980 in English and held by 84 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An objective method for deriving the components of a generalized transport tensor for a two-dimensional model is presented. The method used representative meridional and vertical velocities and thermodynamic scalars at a uniform grid to reduce the problem to solving two flux equations for two unknowns. One unknown is the stream function, coefficient of an antisymmetric tensor, which corrects the Eulerian mean motions for Stokes drift. The other is a time constant, which converts the deviatory velocity tensor (Reynold's stress tensor for temporal averaging) to a symmetric transport tensor. The complete asymmetric tensor is called a transport rather than a diffusion tensor because its divergence yields both advection and diffusion by the deviatory velocities. Advantages and disadvantages of Lagrangian and Eulerian averages are also discussed. (Author)

The objectives of the American Meteorological Society are "the development and dissemination of knowledge of meteorology in all its phases and applications, and the advancement of its professional ideals." The organization of the Society took place in affiliation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science at Saint Louis, Missouri, December 29, 1919, and its incorporation, at Washington, D.C., January 21, 1920. The work of the Society is carried on by the Bulletin, the Journal, and Meteorological Monographs, by papers and discussions at meetings of the Society, through the offices of the Secretary and the Executive Secretary, and by correspondence. All of the Americas are represented in the membership of the Society as well as many foreign countries

An isentropic trajectory study of a strong northeast monsoon surge by Edwin Frederick Danielsen( Book )

3 editions published in 1969 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The evolution of a strong monsoonal surge over China and Southeast Asia which produced an abrupt clearing over N. Vietnam was studied. Isentropic trajectories and the mean vertical motion for successive 12-hour periods were derived from the Montgomery Stream Function and pressure analyses on 290, 300 and 310K isentropic surfaces for each of the 12-hour periods from 12Z, 12 January to 12Z, 15 January 1967. Vertical cross-sections for the same period reveal the complexities in the thermal, moisture and wind fields. Isentropic charts, trajectories and vertical motions indicate that an intense anticyclone formed and intensified when a baroclinically unstable pattern developed north of the Himalayas. The results also indicate that the cold advection, the diffluent flow pattern, the descending motion and the cloudiness were well correlated. The sequence of events which begin at high latitudes and whose effects propagated to the tropical latitudes form a logical sequence which may prove valuable for future analyses and predictions. Research in four-dimensional diagnosis of cyclonic storm cloud systems by Edwin Frederick Danielsen( Book )

6 editions published between 1966 and 1967 in English and held by 7 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The isentropic trajectory method which provides high resolution fields of vertical motions and the history of the air's three dimensional motion has been adapted for a high speed computer. Grid point values of the Montgomery Stream Function and pressure on the isentropic surface are read from hand analyses. All remaining operations are performed by the computer which include: an iterative solution of the balance equation, computations of the path of each trajectory from the Montgomery Stream Function and the balanced wind vectors, contouring of the stream function, isotachs and trajectories, computation and plotting of the vertical velocities. The method of solving the balance equation and the trajectory method are discussed. Comparisons between machine and hand computed trajectories and vertical motions are included for the November storm which was discussed in Scientific Report No. 1. A complete diagnosis of a March storm and a partial diagnosis of an April storm are also presented and discussed. The vertical velocities are well correlated with the clouds, precipitation regions and rates of cyclogenesis

OBJECTIVE CROSS-SECTION ANALYSIS( Book )

1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

The distribution of wind and of temperature in a vertical cross section through the atmosphere is derived from radiosonde and rawinsonde data by an objective analysis procedure suitable for automatic computers. The method of interpolation takes advantage of the fact that soundings in the plane of the cross section provide data along vertical lines rather than at randomly distributed points. The thermal wind equation is used to modify the interpolated distribution through a partial differential equation derived from the calculus of variations. Results indicate that the technique is capable of delineating not only the gross vertical structure of the atmosphere but also some significant layers of high stability and/or potential vorticity which are inadequately defined by analyses in quasi-horizontal planes at the standard pressure levels. PROJECT SPRINGFIELD REPORT( Book )

1 edition published in 1964 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

This report is concerned with the theory and confirmation of a stratospheric-tropospheric exchange which accompanies a folding of the tropopause. Air from the lower part of the cyclonic stratosphere is extruded to form a thin inclined layer in the troposphere. The Springfield data prove that the extruded tropospheric layers contain radioactivity concentrations typical of the stratosphere. Concentrations exceeding the tropospheric by one or two orders of magnitude were measured aboard WB-50 and RB-57 aircraft on specially vectored flight paths. The sharp change in concentrations at the boundaries also confirms that the folding process is predominantly laminar, so it is appropriate to refer to the exchange as a transport rather than a diffusion process. The agreement between the radioactivity and meteorological measurements is remarkable. Of particular value to the radiochemist and meteorologist is the high correlation between the concentrations of radioactivity and the potential vorticity. Since the latter can be determined from conventional radiosonde data, the three dimensional distribution of the former can be approximated. Physical processes capable of mixing the radioactivity from the layers to the ground are also discussed, including their probable distribution with respect to the extruded layers
