Phylogenetic systematics as the basis of comparative biology by V. A Funk( Book )

16 editions published between 1990 and 1993 in English and German and held by 644 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Evolution is the unifying concept of biology. The study of evolution can be approached from a within-lineage (microevolution) or among-lineage (macroevolution) perspective. Phylogenetic systematics (cladistics) is the appropriate basis for all among-lineage studies in comparative biology.Phylogenetic systematics enhances studies in comparative biology in many ways. In the study of developmental constraints, the use of such phylogenies allows for the investigation of the possibility that ontogenetic changes (heterochrony) alone may be sufficient to explain the perceived magnitude of phenotypic change. Speciation via hybridization can be suggested, based on the character patterns of phylogenies. Phylogenetic systematics allows one to examine the potential of historical explanations for biogeographic patterns as well as modes of speciation. The historical components of coevolution, along with ecological and behavioral diversification, can be compared to the explanations of adaptation and natural selection. Because of the explanatory capabilities of phylogenetic systematics, studies in comparative biology that are not based on such phylogenies fail to reach their potential
A bibliography of plant collectors in Bolivia by V. A Funk( Book )

9 editions published between 1988 and 1989 in English and held by 470 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Despite substantial plant collecting in Bolivia, there is no general reference that summarizes information about collectors. Here, we list individuals known to have collected plants in Bolivia and for whom there is published information concerning their lives or their Bolivian collections. For each, we include biographical information, dates of Bolivian collections, herbaria containing the Bolivian specimens, and pertinent references to publications by the collector, or about the collector, the specimens, or the expedition. We also include a section of general references which pertain to several collectors; these are cross-referenced under the discussion of each collector. The type of information available from each general reference is briefly described
A phylogenetic analysis of the Orchidaceae by Pamela Burns-Balogh( Book )

9 editions published between 1986 and 1987 in English and held by 386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Orchidaceae is the largest flowering plant family, with approximately 25,000 species. Sixty-eight apomorphies grouped into forty-two transformation series were used to construct a cladogram for the twenty-six tribes of the family. A detailed discussion of the characters is followed by an in-depth analysis of the cladogram. The cladogram was used to develop a classification and a natural key to the tribes. Seven subfamilies (Neuwiedioideae, Apostasioideae, Cypripedioideae, Spiranthoideae, Neottioideae, Orchidoideae, and Epidendroideae) are divided into 20 tribes, the majority of which are defined by synapomorphies. Of the intrasubfamily classifications, that of the Epidendroideae is the most tenuous. The phylogeny and classification presented here are hypotheses of relationship and are therefore subject to change as more information becomes available

Hawaiian biogeography : evolution on a hot spot archipelago( Book )

7 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 362 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Compares the biogeographic patterns of Hawaii's various species of plants, animals, birds, and insects with its known geological history, and applies a consistent phylogenetic methodology and modern cladistic techniques to a variety of lineages to identify evolutionary and biogeographic patterns among the species. Proves the utility of phylogenetic analysis as a method for examining the evolutionary history of organisms and their relationship to the geological environment. Contains b&w photos and illustrations. c. Book News Inc

Systematics, evolution, and biogeography of Compositae( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This spectacular book does full justice to the Compositae (Asteraceae), the largest and most successful flowering plant family with some 1700 genera and 24,000 species. It is an indispensable reference, providing the most up-to-date hypotheses of phylogenetic relationships in the family based on molecular and morphological characters, along with the corresponding subfamilial and tribal classification. The 2009 work not only integrates the extensive molecular phylogenetic analyses conducted in the last 25 years, but also uses these to produce a metatree for about 900 taxa of Compositae. The book contains 44 chapters, contributed by 80 authors, covering the history, economic importance, character variation, and systematic and phylogenetic diversity of the family. The emphasis of this work is phylogenetic; its chapters provide a detailed, current, and thoroughly documented presentation of the major (and not so major) clades in the family, citing some 2632 references. Like the Compositae, the book is massive, diverse, and fascinating. It is beautifully illustrated, with 170 figures, and an additional 108 cladograms (all consistently color-coded, based on the geographic range of the included taxa); within these figures are displayed 443 color photographs, clearly demonstrating the amazing array of floral and vegetative form expressed by members of the clade."--NHBS Environment Bookstore
