The Local Government Records Commission was created by Act no. 87-658 in 1987 to replace the County Records Commission. The Commission is responsible for determing which county, municipal and other local government records are to be preserved permanently because of historical value and which may be destroyed or otherwise disposed of after they have been microfilmed. The Commission consists of twelve members: the Director of the Ala. Dept. of Archives and History, the Chief Examiner of the Dept. of Examiners of Public Accounts, the Attorney General, the Secretary of State, one historian from the University of Alabama, one historian from Auburn University, one probate judge who is not a chairman of a county commission, two chairmen of county commissions who are not also probate judges, one county tax assessor and two city clerks. The Commission receives administrative support through the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History

The department cooperated with the federal government in researching physical obstructions to air navigation. If a broadcaster wants to erect a tower, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) informed the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) which would inform the department. The department would research the proposed tower and report any objections to the CAA. The files contain correspondence, maps, and drawings. Some files have records of more than one obstruction pertaining to a particular area. This series is no longer created. Such matters are now the responsibility of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) which succeeded the CAA in the 1950's. Some of these files were created by the State Aviation Commission (1935-1943) and the Aviation Commission (1943-1945)
