Dissolution of platinum in catalyst materials using hydrochloric acid: A new method based on the use of complex oxides( )

Highlights: Pt in Pt/Al2 O3 model catalyst could be dissolved in HCl via formation of alkali metal platinates. The method can be used with spent automotive catalysts containing Pt, Pd, and Rh. The method is much safer than current ones, which use toxic oxidizing agents. Abstract: Platinum group metals (PGMs) are used widely in various applications, including as environmental catalysts. Since PGMs are rare and expensive, they are recycled after being recovered. Currently, PGMs are recovered, after a pyrometallurgical step that upgrades the concentration, by dissolving in strong acids containing toxic oxidizing agents like aqua regia. To avoid the use of such toxic agents, we have proposed a new route to dissolve PGMs in hydrochloric acid (HCl) using complex oxides. In the present study, we used this new process to dissolve Pt in supported metal catalysts. Complex oxides of Pt were prepared by calcining mixtures of Pt/Al2 O3 and alkali metal salts at 600–800 °C in air. These were then dissolved in 12 M HCl. The results showed that the Pt in the calcined samples dissolved readily in HCl and that the Pt solubility was nearly 100% under the appropriate preparation and dissolution conditions. We also confirmed that the new process is suitable for leaching PGMs from spent automotive catalysts
Enhanced dissolution of alkali metal platinates in dilute hydrochloric acid by addition of calcium chloride( )

Highlights: The addition of CaCl2 in 3 M HCl drastically enhanced the solubility of platinates. Platinates were prepared by calcinations of Pt(0) with alkali metal salts in air. Our new process is much safer than current methods using toxic oxidizing agents. Abstract: To decrease the environmental load from current Pt recovery processes that use strong acids in combination with oxidizing agents, the dissolution of Pt in hydrochloric acid (HCl) by way of alkali metal platinates was examined. The alkali metal platinates, Li2 PtO3, Na2 PtO3, and a (Na, Li)2 PtO3 solid solution, were prepared by calcining mixtures of Pt black and the alkali metal carbonates (Li, Na) at 600−800 °C in air. The dissolution of the resulting alkali metal platinates in HCl solutions was monitored by inductively coupled plasma–optical emission spectrometry. The results showed that Pt solubility approached 100% after choosing the appropriate calcination conditions. It was also found that by adding calcium chloride, the rate of Pt dissolution in dilute HCl significantly increased. The dissolution behavior of the alkali metal platinates was discussed based on the dissolution rates of the alkali metals and Pt ions, together with the crystal structures of the platinates
