He finds himself caught up in Cullerne life, and hears rumours about a mystery surrounding the claim to the title of Lord Blandamer, whose coat of arms in the Minster's great transept window is the nebuly coat of the title. When the new Lord Blandamer arrives, promising to pay all the costs of the restoration, Westray suspects that the new lord is not what he seems." -- from Wikipedia entry (accessed June 20, 2013)

A gothic melodrama of smuggling, intrigue and upper class decadence seen through the eyes of an eleven-year-old boy. The recreation of 18th century Dorsetshire in the studio apparently suited Lang, allowing him more control through pre-planning. Although he disliked the format, Lang deploys CinemaScope well using lighting, set design, camera movement and placement to make a virtue of early 'Scope's shallow lateral space. Behind the atmospherics is Lang's approach to the romantic aura of this period material - characteristically critical yet sensitive to the romantic elements. This laserdisc version is letterboxed to retain the original CinemaScope format
