Mimesis : the representation of reality in Western literature by Erich Auerbach ( Book )
261 editions published between 1945 and 2013 in 16 languages and held by 4,515 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
From the Back Cover: One of the most significant works of literary criticism of this century, Erich Auerbach's MIMESIS undertakes a new and profound approach to major moments in Western literature. More than a work of literary criticism, this study is filled with insights into the Western imagination and Western culture itself, in its repeated attempts to master and control reality and experience. Auerbach's studies range from the beginnings of Western literary consciousness to the present. The significant moments of art and awareness he studies are in themselves keys to the meaning of Homer, Petronius, Gregory of Tours, The song of Roland, Chretien de Troyes, Dante, Boccaccio, Rabelais, Montaigne, Shakespeare, Cevantes, Moliere, Racine, the Abbe Prevost, Schiller, Stendhal, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, Zola, Virginia Woolf, and others. Comprehensive as his survey is in scope, the studies themselves are closely focused, penetrating, and minute, and serve to show how the strategies of language and rhetoric are the ultimate ways in which the various images are distinguishable from each other in their grasp and representation of reality. The major revolutios in the sense and portrayal of reality are seen to reverberate deeply with significances relevant to transformations in our culture
Dante, poet of the secular world by Erich Auerbach ( Book )
26 editions published between 1961 and 2007 in 3 languages and held by 1,459 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
A precursor and companion to Erich Auerbach's majestic Mimesis, Dante: Poet of the Secular World is both a comprehensive introduction to the work of one of the greatest poets and a brilliantly provocative and stimulating essay in the history of ideas. Here Auerbach, acclaimed by writers and scholars as various as Terry Eagleton, Guy Davenport, and Alfred Kazin as one of the greatest critics of the twentieth century, argues paradoxically but powerfully that it is to Dante, supreme among Christian poets, that we owe the concept of the secular world. Dante's poetry, Auerbach shows, offers an extraordinary synthesis of the sensuous and the conceptual, and individual and the universal, that redefined notions of human character and fate and opened the way into modernity

Studi su Dante by Erich Auerbach ( Book )
84 editions published between 1963 and 2012 in 4 languages and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Dante als dichter der irdischen welt by Erich Auerbach ( Book )
22 editions published between 1929 and 2001 in German and Undetermined and held by 238 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

13 editions published between 1924 and 2010 in German and held by 127 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Main description: Giambattista Vico (1668-1744) was one of the most original and idiosyncratic philosophers before Kant and Hegel. Although Giorgio Vasari had already diagnosed a cycle of rise, blossoming and decline in the history of art, Vico was the first to base this on a philosophical system. Isolated in Naples from direct contact with the philosophical life of his times, he worked at his grand design of the cycles of rise, blossoming, decline and eternal return which he saw in all areas of culture. His points of reference were ancient mythology and Greek and Roman history. To that extent, he is regarded today as the founder of the philosophy of history and the precursor of a tradition which extends to Hegel and Oswald Spengler's "Decline of the West"
