1.1 Why Study Solitons? The last century of physics, which was initiated by Maxwell's completion of the theory of electromagnetism, can, with some justification, be called the era of linear physi cs. ~Jith few excepti ons, the methods of theoreti ca 1 phys ics have been dominated by linear equations (Maxwell, Schrodinger), linear mathematical objects (vector spaces, in particular Hilbert spaces), and linear methods (Fourier transforms, perturbation theory, linear response theory) . Naturally the importance of nonlinearity, beginning with the Navier-Stokes equations and continuing to gravitation theory and the interactions of par ticles in solids, nuclei, and quantized fields, was recognized. However, it was hardly possible to treat the effects of nonlinearity, except as a per turbation to the basis solutions of the linearized theory. During the last decade, it has become more widely recognized in many areas of "field physics" that nonlinearity can result in qualitatively new phenom ena which cannot be constructed via perturbation theory starting from linear ized equations. By "field physics" we mean all those areas of theoretical physics for which the description of physical phenomena leads one to consider field equations, or partial differential equations of the form (1.1.1) ~t or ~tt = F(~, ~x ...) for one- or many-component "fields" Ht, x, y ...) The analytic properties as functions of wave number k of the solutions of a single-electron Schrodinger equation for one-dimensional periodic potentials with inversion symmetry have been treated by Kohn for nonconnected energy bands. Kohns results are generalized in order to include the case of missing inversion symmetry and connected bands; already known results are reviewed to a certain extent in order to treat the generalizations in a closed frame. A simple proof is given, that the Schrodinger equation, considered as differential equation with initial conditions, has solutions which are holomorphic as functions of the parameter E throughout the whole complex E-plane even in the very singular cases when the potential contains 8-functions or infinities which are not too strong. The Floquet functions are then constructed in the usual way. The asymptotic behavior of the functions for large (E) is discussed in a detailed way and some remarks are made in the case of singular potentials. The inverse of the function E(k) is also considered. The structure of the Riemannian surface of E(k) is obtained. The Bloch functions are normalized without assuming inversion symmetry for the potential. Their analytic structure turns out to be somewhat more complicated than that of E(k). (Author)

An investigation was made of the mean square deviation of the order parameter from its equilibrium for Type II Superconductors, assuming that the Gibbs free energy is given by a Ginzburg-Landau type functional. It turns out, that the equilibrium function, which is already varying with position because of the penetrating magnetic flux, resists distortion much less than the constant order parameter in type I superconductors. Therefore, the mean square deviation becomes equal in magnitude to the square of the equilibrium order parameter in the magnetic field range ((H sub c2)-B)/(H sub c2) approx. <0.0001 to 0.00001. This means, that the range of magnetic fields, in which Ginzburg-Landau type descriptions should fail and a singular behavior might show up seems not entirely out of reach of present experimental techniques in contrast to the situation in type I superconductors. Determination of kappa-1(t) and kappa-2(t) for type two superconductors with arbitrary impurity concentration( Book )

Formulas are derived for the constants kappa-1 and kappa-2 of superconducting alloys for arbitrary temperatures and impurity concentrations. Beginning with Gorkov's equations in matrix-form, the free energy density is calculated using Abrikosov's assumption of a fluxoid lattice. The impurities are treated by the usual averaging technique, retaining only s-and p-scattering, and a special technique is developed to treat exactly the non-vanishing commutator of different components of the gauge invariant derivative. The results contain the already known limiting cases. Intermediate values are obtained by performing machine calculations using the general formulas developed here. It is found that the values of kappa-1 and kappa-2 drop relatively strongly even for small impurity concentration, and also depend unexpectedly strongly on the ratio of sand p-scattering. The recent result of Cyrot, Caroli and de Gennes is confirmed according to which kappa-2 is approximately equal to kappa-1 in the firty limit. (Author)
