Yet along with the appeal of frontier adventure these media adaptations bear the weight of powerful meanings. Each new version addresses these meanings differently and raises questions about wilderness and frontier, about western expansion, about the relationships between men and women, about the association of whites with "Indians."
Ill effects : the media/violence debate by Martin Barker( Book )

43 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,609 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Ill Effects suggests new and productive ways in which we can understand the influences of the media and question why the effects paradigm still exerts a tenacious hold in some quarters. Refusing to adopt the absurd position that the media have no influence at all, Ill Effects rethinks the notion of media influence in ways which take into account how people actually use and interact with the media in their everyday lives."--Jacket
A 'toxic genre' : the Iraq War films by Martin Barker( )

16 editions published in 2011 in English and held by 1,056 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Over the last five years, a cycle of films has emerged addressing the ongoing Iraq conflict. A few became well-known and one of them, The Hurt Locker, won a string of Oscars. But many others disappeared into obscurity. What is it about these films that led Variety to dub them a 'toxic genre'? Martin Baker analyses the production and reception of these recent Iraq war films. Among the issues he examines are the borrowing of soldiers' YouTube styles of self-representation to generate an 'authentic' Iraq experience, and how they take refuge in 'apolitical' post-traumatic stress disorder. Barker also looks afresh at some classic issues in film theory: the problems of accounting for film 'failures'; the shaping role of production systems; the significance of genre-naming, and the impact of that 'toxic' label

Live to your local cinema : the remarkable rise of livecasting by Martin Barker( Book )

13 editions published between 2011 and 2014 in English and held by 349 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The phenomenon of 'livecasting'--that is, the broadcasting of live performances such as theatre and opera to local cinemas-- only emerged in 2006. Since then it has grown exponentially. How did this remarkable growth come about and what are its implications? Martin Barker tells the story of this rise, and shows the challenges it has laid down to many ways of thinking about arts and culture. He explores how a new aesthetic of filming these performances has been developed. Drawing on both his own and commercial researches, he shows who the audiences are for livecasts, and the ways they judge their success. He charts the many debates over the 'liveness' of the arts, looking particularly at how livecasting disturbs our assumptions, and examines claims that this development amounts to a new 'democratisation' of culture. The book closes with a series of proposals for the future of research on this remarkable development."--

A haunt of fears : the strange history of the British horror comics campaign by Martin Barker( Book )

13 editions published between 1984 and 1992 in English and held by 278 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

British frenzy over U.S. horror comics and links to Communist propaganda in the Cold War era! Between 1949 and 1955 Britain, like many other countries, was swept by a rising tide of panic over "American-style" or "horror" comics. The British press cried out in alarm: "Now Ban This Filth That Poisons Our Children," "Drive Out the Horror Comics." As one frenzied columnist protested: "I feel as though I have been trudging through a sewer." A campaign against ghoulish comic books climaxed in an Act of Parliament making it illegal to publish or sell any material in comic form deemed to be "harmful to children." But behind the facade of concern for the protection of children another very different story lurked. A Haunt of Fears, published here in the first U.S. edition, reveals how the Communist Party came to play a central role in this anti-comics campaign and how a curious gap opened between the private concerns of the campaigners and their public rhetoric. A Haunt of Fears raises serious questions about the state of British culture during this era
Alien audiences : remembering and evaluating a classic movie by Martin Barker( )

11 editions published between 2015 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 243 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Ridley Scott's 1979 Alien has attained classic status and is one of the most analysed films by scholars. But until now, there have been no published studies of its audiences. This book presents the findings of a major project exploring how different kinds of viewers engage with the film. Based on over 1,000 responses, the authors uncover some surprising patterns and tendencies. These disclose, among other things, the remarkable role played by parents and other relatives in 'gifting' the film to their children, raising important questions about the idea of 'age-inappropriate' viewing, a fascinating ambiguity over the role of 'acting' in the notorious 'chestburster scene' and an important shift in the way audiences see Alien as 'more than just a film' once imitations and parodies become prevalent. Some particularly long and rich responses reveal how this film can go on arousing strong visceral responses, even after repeated viewings. Richly illustrated with quotations, this book will shift current understandings of horror film audiences
