The Java language specification by James Gosling( Book )

31 editions published between 1996 and 2014 in English and held by 537 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Written by the inventors of the technology, The Java Language Specification is the definitive technical reference for the Java programming language. It provides complete, accurate, and detailed coverage of the entire language and its syntax. If you want to know the precise meaning of Java's constructs, this is the source for you. The book specifies all of Java's syntax and semantics. It contains both lexical and syntactic grammars for the language, including a LALR(1) grammar. It describes all aspects of the language as checked by a Java compiler, including the semantics of all types, statements, and expressions. It also covers all aspects of the Java execution model, including exceptions, threads, and binary compatibility. In addition, the book gives specifications for all the types defined in the core packages of Java's Application Programming Interface (API): java.lang,, and java.util

VLSI systems and computations by H. T Kung( Book )

13 editions published in 1981 in English and held by 353 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The papers in this book were presented at the CMU Conference on VLSI Systems and Computations, held October 19-21, 1981 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Department, Carnegie-Mellon University and was partially supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. These proceedings focus on the theory and design of computational systems using VLSI. Until very recently, integrated-circuit research and development were concentrated in the device physics and fabrication design disciplines and in the integrated-circuit industry itself. Within the last few years, a community of researchers is growing to address issues closer to computer science: the relationship between computing structures and the physical structures that implement them; the specification and verification of computational procosses implemented in VLSI; the use of massively parallel computing made possible by VLSI; the design of special purpose computing architectures; and the changes in general-purpose computer architecture that VLSI makes possible. It is likely that the future exploitation of VLSI technology depends as much on structural and design innovations as on advances in fabrication technology. The book is divided into nine sections: - Invited Papers. Six distinguished researchers from industry and academia presented invited papers. - Models of Computation. The papers in this section deal with abstracting the properties of VLSI circuits into models that can be used to analyze the chip area, time or energy required for a particular computation

Data parallel algorithms by Guy L Steele( Visual )

7 editions published between 1990 and 1991 in English and held by 44 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Lecture by Guy Steele, Jr. of Thinking Machines. Steele is a senior scientist who directs design/implementation of parallel programming languages for the Connection Machine. Outlines the data parallel programming environment, detailing elementwise operations, conditionals, replication, reduction, permutation, and scanning. He uses specific parallel algorithms to show the use of these building blocks in real applications. Ends with a Q & A session

The reasoned schemer by Daniel P Friedman( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The goal of The Reasoned Schemer is to help the functional programmer think logically and the logic programmer think functionally. The authors of The Reasoned Schemer believe that logic programming is a natural extension of functional programming, and they demonstrate this by extending the functional language Scheme with logical constructs - thereby combining the benefits of both styles. The extension encapsulates most of the ideas in the logic programming language Prolog." "The pedagogical method of The Reasoned Schemer is a series of questions and answers, which proceed with the characteristic humor that marked The Little Schemer and The Seasoned Schemer. Familiarity with a functional language or with the first eight chapters of The Little Schemer is assumed."

Effective Java by Joshua Bloch( Book )

5 editions published between 2001 and 2007 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Designed to help Java programmers make the most effective use of the Java programming language and its fundamental libraries, this updated edition includes more than 50 essays, each of which conveys one rule. Helping programmers sidestep common misconceptions and errors, each rule captures best practices that have been tested in the real world. Just one of the key features in this book are the code examples that illustrate many useful design patterns and idoms. Another key feature is the advice on what not to do. Providing examples of what practices to avoid helps programmers side step common misconceptions and errors. While the second edition will cover all of the classic topics developers have come to rely on- objects, classes, libraries, methods, and serialization; new to this edition will be the coverage on generics, metadata, autoboxing, concurrency utilities, memory model, enumerations, and more. The book is based on the philosophy that clarity and simplicity are of paramount importance. The concise essays teach Java programmers of all levels how to write correct, clear, reusable, and effective code. Learning the art of Java programming, like most other disciples, consists of learning the rules and then learning when to violate them. With this book in hand, Java programmers will truly learn the rules and then learn when to violate them

Lambda : the ultimate declarative by Guy L Steele( Book )

6 editions published in 1976 in English and Undetermined and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this paper, a sequel to LAMBDA: The Ultimate Imperative, a new view of LAMBDA as a renaming operator is presented and contrasted with the usual functional view taken by LISP. This view, combined with the view of function invocation as a kind of generalized GOTO, leads to several new insights into the nature of the LISP evaluation mechanism and the symmetry between form and function, evaluation and application, and control and environment. It also complements Hewitt's actors theory nicely, explaining the intent of environment manipulation as cleanly, generally, and intuitively as the actors theory explains control structures. The relationship between functional and continuation-passing styles of programming is also clarified

RABBIT : a compiler for SCHEME (a dialect of LISP), a study in compiler optimization based on viewing LAMBDA as RENAME and PROCEDURE CALL as GOTO using the techniques of macro definition of control and environment structures, source-to-source transformation, procedure integration and tail-recursion by Guy L Steele( Book )

3 editions published between 1978 and 1979 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

We have developed a compiler for the lexically-scoped dialect of LISP known as SCHEME. The compiler knows relatively little about specific data manipulation primitives such as arithmetic operators, but concentrates on general issues of environment and control. Rather than having specialized knowledge about a large variety of control and environment constructs, the compiler handles only a small basis set which reflects the semantics of lambda-calculus. All of the traditional imperative constructs, such as sequencing, assignment, looping, GOTO, as well as many standard LISP constructs such as AND, OR, and COND, are expressed as macros in terms of the applicative basis set. A small number of optimization techniques, coupled with the treatment of function calls as GOTO statements, serve to produce code as good as that produced by more traditional compilers. The macro approach enables speedy implementation of new constructs as desired without sacrificing efficiency in the generated code
