"A 39 ans, Itô Jakuchû (1716-1800) abandonne le commerce familial de légumes pour s'adonner exclusivement à la peinture. Il se rase le crâne et devient un adepte du bouddhisme zen. Ses estampes à l'encre noire comme plume de corbeau se dépouillent de tout superflu pour s'imprégner de spiritualité. Sur un fond d'un noir dense, fleurs, plantes, insectes, animaux se détachent en blanc, selon les lignes d'un tracé d'une énergie et d'une intensité saisissantes. Ces images en négatif, qui adoptent la technique originale du takuhanga, étaient réservées à un cercle restreint d'amis lettrés, d'où la rareté des exemplaires conservés dans les collections japonaises et ecidentales.
