What teachers need to know about language by Lily Wong Fillmore( Book )

2 editions published in 2000 in English and held by 82 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Today's teachers need access to a wide range of information to function in the classroom. They need a thorough understanding of how language figures in education, and for that reason they must receive systematic and intensive preparation in educational linguistics. A thorough grounding in linguistics would support teachers' undertakings overall, and in particular in teaching literacy skills and working with English language learners. If approached coherently, such preparation would also cover many of the desired teacher competencies, relating to skills in assessing children, in individualizing instruction, and in respecting diversity. This paper lays out a rationale for why current and prospective teachers need to know more about language, and what specific sorts of knowledge they need. Requisite knowledge about oral language, oral language used in formal and academic contexts, and written language is discussed. In the final section, courses are suggested that teacher preparation programs should offer to teacher candidates. This course list may also be seen as specifying aspects of an integrated, in-depth professional development program for inservice teachers. A glossary is appended. (Contains 53 references.) (Kft)

Locating learning : the social contexts of second-language acquisition, final report, the social contexts of learning in bilingual classrooms by Donald A Hansen( Book )

1 edition published in 1983 in English and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A study of the role of classroom lessons in the acquisition of English as a second language by Spanish speakers that compared language acquisition at school and during the summer months is reported. An introductory chapter outlines fundamental assumptions about the loci and intentionality of second-language learning, and the second chapter describes the research design. Chapter three examines the contexts of second language acquisition in terms of language use and learning behaviors. The fourth chapter, on the central importance of lesson value and lesson confidence, looks at past research, the competence-incompetence paradox examined through interviews with teachers, and the interaction influences of lesson value and lesson confidence. The fifth chapter focuses on strategies of learning and non-learning in the classroom as a measure of the interactive influences of lesson value and lesson confidence. Chapter six examines the relationship between learning strategies and language attitudes, and chapter seven discusses engaging language learning opportunities in the classroom through the interplay of language orientations and learning strategies. A summary chapter and a list of references are included, and appended materials include the quantitative instruments for children used in the study, the learning strategies Q-sort, and the teacher and principal interviews. It is concluded that classroom lessons do increase language learning, and that the interactive variables are complex and require further research. (Mse)

Latino Families and the Schools by Lily Wong Fillmore( Book )

2 editions published in 1990 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Based on personal narratives, this paper describes Latino children's school experience and suggests home-school collaboration for improving Latino children's education. Latino children begin school as confident, eager, and enthusiastic learners. But well before the third grade, many Latino students begin to experience academic problems and generally are a year or two behind in reading, math, and other areas assessed by the school. It is estimated that some 40 percent of Latino children will drop out before they complete high school. Latino children learn two things from their experiences in school: what happens in school has little relevance to real life and they are losers in the learning game. However, many educational difficulties that Latino children encounter are caused by the widely-held assumption that what is wrong with Latino students is related to their parents, who provide little school preparation to their children. This assumption has created a trend for compensatory early education programs to remove Latino children from the influences of their parents. This practice undermines the relationship between parents and children. Child development centers sponsored by the Foundation Center for Phenomenological Research have been found to effectively serve the children of seasonal and migrant farm workers. These centers' work illustrate that the family culture should be involved in successful education. Parent comments concerning the effectiveness of child development centers are included. (Lp)

Second language learning in children : a proposed model by Lily Wong Fillmore( Book )

2 editions published in 1985 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Three types of processes occur in language learning, each intricately connected with the others. Social processes are the steps by which learners and target language speakers create a social situation in which target language communication is possible and desired. Linguistic processes are the ways in which assumptions held by target language speakers cause them to select, modify, and support the linguistic data produced for the sake of the learners. Cognitive processes involve the analytical procedures and operations taking place in learners' heads and ultimately resulting in acquisition of the language, and can be general or specialized for language learning. Both types of cognitive processes are involved in language learning, but in first language learning the specialized processes dominate, and in second language learning the general processes are more heavily involved. These processes work or do not work in relation to variation in three components of language learning: the learners, the target language speakers who provide access to the language, and the social setting that brings them together frequently enough for learning to occur. Much of the variability in language learning can be attributed to differences among learners in the application of cognitive mechanisms and ability, but can also be related to differences in the other two components.
