Probability theory : the logic of science by
E. T Jaynes(
)
55 editions published between 1996 and 2017 in English and held by 2,502 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The standard rules of probability can be interpreted as uniquely valid principles in logic. In this book, E.T. Jaynes dispels the imaginary distinction between "probability theory" and "statistical inference", leaving a logical unity and simplicity, which provides greater technical power and flexibility in applications. This book goes beyond the conventional mathematics of probability theory, viewing the subject in a wider context. New results are discussed, along with applications of probability theory to a wide variety of problems in physics, mathematics, economics, chemistry and biology. It contains many exercises and problems, and is suitable for use as a textbook on graduate level courses involving data analysis. The material is aimed at readers who are already familiar with applied mathematics at an advanced undergraduate level or higher. The book will be of interest to scientists working in any area where inference from incomplete information is necessary

Physics and probability : essays in honor of Edwin T. Jaynes by
Walter T Grandy(
Book
)
16 editions published between 1993 and 2004 in English and held by 266 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The pioneering work of Edwin T. Jaynes in the field of statistical physics, quantum optics, and probability theory has had a significant and lasting effect on the study of many physical problems, ranging from fundamental theoretical questions through to practical applications such as optical image restoration. Physics and Probability is a collection of papers in these areas by some of his many colleagues and former students, based largely on lectures given at a symposium celebrating Jaynes' contributions, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday and retirement as Wayman Crow Professor of Physics at Washington University. The collection contains several authoritative overviews of current research on maximum entropy and quantum optics, where Jaynes' work has been particularly influential, as well as reports on a number of related topics. In the concluding paper, Jaynes looks back over his career, and gives encouragement and sound advice to young scientists. All those engaged in research on any of the topics discussed in these papers will find this a useful and fascinating collection, and a fitting tribute to an outstanding and innovative scientist

Theory of microwave coupling systems by
E. T Jaynes(
Book
)
2 editions published in 1945 in English and held by 2 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
There is need for a more widespread understanding is the theory of microwave coupling systems. In the past few years the intensive work in microwaves has resulted in the development of a new field of techniques. A number of books have appeared treating the theory of transmission lines and resonant cavities at microwave frequencies, but there is as yet no generally available account of the theory of the equally necessary coupling systems which connect these components. In RF work we are concerned almost all of the time with three types of components, namely resonant cavities, transmission lines (including waveguides), and arrangements for coupling energy between these systems. The properties of transmission lines and resonant cavities are well known, as they have been treated in a number of excellent recent books. It is the purpose of this discussion to develop the relations which must hold in a linear coupling system regarded as a fourterminal network connecting two lines, two cavities, or a line and a cavity, and to point out how these relations may be used to find values of circuit parameters, such as Q or coefficient of coupling, in terms of measurements which can be made with the most commonly available laboratory instruments. Such measurements form the basis for any logical design or development procedure

1 edition published in 1974 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide
This final report is a summary of the effort during the final period of a project on optimum detection systems. The summary is divided into two sections: physics and electrical engineering. Included in the physics section are summary remarks on a quantum noise experiment, a sodium decay experiment, applications of quantum electrodynamics and further developments in the neoclassical radiation theory. The engineering section summarizes the effort on hybrid technology for integrated optics and the interaction of guided optical waves and surface acoustic waves
