Almost nothing : the 20th-century art and life of Józef Czapski by Eric Karpeles( Book )

1 edition published in 2018 in English and held by 56 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Józef Czapski (1896-1993) lived many lives--as a soldier, public figure, historical witness, memoirist, essayist, and painter. His ninety-six years nearly span the twentieth century in its entirety. He was a student in St. Petersburg during the Russian Revolution and a painter in Paris in the Roaring Twenties. As a Polish reserve officer fighting against the invading Nazis in the opening weeks of the Second World War, he was taken prisoner by the Soviets and survived the Katyn Massacre. He never returned to Poland, working tirelessly in Paris to keep awareness of the plight of his homeland alive, overrun by totalitarian powers. Czapski was a towering public figure, but painting gave meaning to his life. Eric Karpeles, also a painter, reveals Czapski's full complexity, pulling together all the threads of this remarkable life"--
Lost time : lectures on Proust in a Soviet prison camp by Józef Czapski( Book )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 54 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The first translation of painter and writer Jozef Czapski's inspiring lectures on Proust, first delivered in a prison camp in the Soviet Union during World War II. During the Second World War, in the heart of the malevolent Soviet Union, a Polish prisoner of war brought Marcel Proust's novel À la recherche du temps perdu to life without a single page of text available for reference. Presenting a series of lectures in an attempt to distract his fellow officers from their collective misery, Jozef Czapski managed to revive the novel and his experience of reading it purely from memory. It was a clarifying moment for him, a Proustian moment. His talks were given in French, helping to focus the men's minds and distract their thoughts from their grim surroundings. Calling upon deep reserves of aesthetic knowledge and critical thinking in a variety of languages, Czapski offered aspects of Proust's story, like Scheherazade, night after night. His lectures are a testament to the survival of memories of both worlds woven together, the fictional Faubourg Saint-Germain and the actual Soviet prison camp"--

Józef Czapski : a life in translation by Keith Botsford( Book )

4 editions published between 2008 and 2009 in English and held by 30 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Józef Czapski (1896-1993) was an artist, author, critic, and one of the founders of the influential Polish emigré monthly Kultura (published in Paris until 2000). But who was the real Czapski? This cahier is a bold attempt by Keith Botsford to answer this question. Violating convention, he attempts to write Czapski's autobiography, or a 'biography from within'. Besides Czapski's own words, twelve of his paintings bear testimony to this momentous life." http://www.sylpheditions.com/kb.html
